Danita grew up on the Tasman Peninsula and has always felt connected to this beautiful place. When the opportunity came up to purchase a little piece of land, my hubby and I jumped at the chance. We wanted to create a space where there would be little to no impact on the environment, a space to be shared with others, to enjoy, relax and to experience the magical seaside community. We decided to build the Bunker and source materials that could be repurposed, restored and/or reused. We tracked down materials from around Tasmania that had history or could potentially end up in land fill. We used Tasmanian Oak, pallet wood, pre loved roofing and search for interesting home wares that tell a story. The Bunker Build We started by thinking what we could do with the 5m x 5m colour bond shed that was on the property. A tree had fallen and damaged the shed roof, the whole property was overgrown with tall dry grass, half burnt trees that was caused by the Dunalley fires several years previously. No fencing, just an exposed burnt-out space. At the time all we could see was just how amazing it would be to transform this little piece of paradise and for the past four years that’s what we did, we built the Bunker. Every part of the Bunker tells a story; the ceiling are made from the use of pallets by removing every piece of wood, de-nailed, sanded and white washed. The kitchenette is made using pre-loved Tasmanian Oak. The kitchen bench cabinet belonged to my great grandmother, this too has been lovingly restored and incorporated into the kitchenette. The Constantine door that divides the living and bedroom space was rescued from a Lindisfarne tear down. The bed is made from pallets. The front fencing is made using the roof from a house in Primrose Sands that was heading for landfill. The art deco walling in the toilet came from a bungalow in Bellerive. The cool glass blocks in the shower were purchased from a Devonport business who were re-decorating their retro office space. Wherever we could upcycle we did. The end result is a cozy, unique and special place to get away from it all. We look forward to welcoming you to the Bunker!
