Unbelievable experience. Beautiful family, unrelenting hospitality. I'm overwhelmed with feelings of appreciation and gratitude. I got to do some work on the farm with them, it felt like i was a kid again working with my own family. The feelings and emotions washing over me from the experience are bringing me to tears. Way more profound than i could have ever expected.
I came for a weekend conference and John and Cindy's beautiful funky farmstead was the perfect choice for a place to stay. Very convenient to Chapel Hill and UNC at a fraction of the price of local hotels. They are sweet, friendly, considerate hosts who give you plenty of space but enjoy getting to know their guests. They run an organic farm and the accommodations are a nice, comfortable, simple bed with a desk, dresser, and comfortable arm chair. It was great that the upstairs had a separate entrance so I could come and go even if I got in late without feeling as though I was disturbing anyone.
I worked at a Biotech in the RTP area and ended up living with John and Cindy for two months while I was in between leases. John and Cindy were warm and welcoming from the beginning. I enjoyed numerous delicious dinners with them; they are gourmet chefs with a well-stocked garden/farm at their disposal! John and Cindy welcomed me in as family and invited me on numerous outings including but not limited to the Saxapahaw farmers market concert, the beach, and Secondhand Puppet Intervention; I highly recommend the Kraken Bar on Wednesday nights to see Jonathon Byrd and the Pickup Cowboys perform! John and Cindy are quite accommodating in that they allow you to make your stay what you want. I am a naive city slicker and they allowed me to tag along and help with farm work when I so chose; I picked okra, tended to shiitake mushrooms, drove a tractor, hung my clothes up on a clothesline and helped tear a fence down! I chose to fully embrace the farm lifestyle for two months and found it to be a breath of fresh air from being in lab all day. Nights on their farm are quite relaxing. I enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of crickets and frogs every night. I found myself more rested than when I had my apartment. I would recommend bug spray for extended stays on the porch in the evenings-but that is anywhere in NC! My only regret was not spending more time drinking morning coffee on their covered deck. I took my coffee out there on the last day and I realized I had made a big mistake of rushing off to lab early every morning instead of spending 10 minutes enjoying the view and morning fog. The accommodations are as advertised. Their home is a working farmhouse. The bedroom is comfortable and allowed me to work in the evenings. The bathroom has everything you could need. AT&T and Sprint have horrible reception out there but Verizon has a pretty good cell signal. I used their WIFI all the time so it wasn't too big a deal but I usually dropped calls in the car drive to the farm. John and Cindy are phenomenal hosts and sorely missed! I wish them all the best!
Cindy's farm is exactly what was advertised; it is an organic farm in rural North Carolina outside of Chapel Hill. It was perfect for me, as I was visiting my son's family for a celebration and needed a nearby place to stay (about 5 miles from my son's house). I was originally greeted by a large wandering turkey, who was not particularly interested in me. There are 3 dogs on the farm, so anyone who is instinctively afraid of dogs might take pause, but I happen to enjoy dogs and these dogs were all enjoyable. The accommodations were basically an upstairs bedroom in an old farmhouse. There is a shared bathroom (one other guest), which resulted in no inconvenience whatsoever. So for me, the value and location could not have been better.
I spent my high school years in Greece, and my family welcomed assorted visitors from various countries. My farming may have been inspired by seeing Greek shepherds guiding sheep or turkeys down city streets; or maybe it was the sights and smells of fruits and vegetables piled high on tables at weekly farmers' markets in the 1970's. My husband John and I ultimately switched to organic farming because we like working for ourselves, we like working outdoors, and we like people. Our occupation necessitates all of these.
