Tongin-dong, was one of the most important cultural districts for artists of old time Korea. Tongin-dong is a significant cultural area as it is surrounded by many historical site, such as Gyeongbok Palace, the Blue House, Gwanghwa Gate, Yeongchu Gate, Geumchun, Tongin Market and Inwang Mountain. 조선의 왕국인 경복궁의 서쪽, 서촌은 한글을 창제한 세종대왕이 태어나신 곳 이다. ‘세한도’로 유명한 추사 김정희도 이곳에서 태어나고 자랐으며 그의 제자였던 무명의 허련이 조선 말기 남종화의 마지막 거장으로 성장한 곳이기도 하다. 조선시대 진경산수화를 개척한 겸재정선 또한 벗들과 노닐었던 장소이다. 이후 일제시대에는 사회적 제약 속에서도 화가 이중섭, 구본웅, 이상범, 박노수와 시인 윤동주, 서정주가 교류하며 한국 근대문화의 근간을 이룬 곳이며 이들과 함께 했던 요절한 천재 시인 이상이 ‘오감도’에서 묘사한 그 ‘막다른 골목’도 바로 이곳이다. 청와대, 광화문, 영추문, 금천시장, 통인시장, 북악산, 인왕산을 주변에 두른 그 중심에 통의동 보안여관은 자리하고 있다.
