The cottage is bright and cozy and sleeps 4 comfortably. Bedroom has 1 queen and 1 twin bed. Additional twin bed is in a shared common area with the kitchen. It has a fully equipped kitchen (no oven though, just stove top), hot beverage bar, washer and dryer, covered patio with outside seating and a gas grill. Satelite TV and a variety of nature videos are available as well as Wifi internet. Quailway Cottage is a nature lover’s paradise. Nestled midway between the Peloncillo Mountains in SW New Mexico and the Chiricahua Mountains in SE Arizona it provides the perfect location for all forms of nature explorations. The cottage is located on 20 acres of desert habitat and also features an abundance of fruit trees and water features to attract local wildlife. Plenty of bird feeding stations situated behind the cottage provides you a private oasis to observe a huge variety of area bird life. Quailway Cottage can be a good base station for folks who enjoy birding, herpetology, entomology and many other wildlife experiences throughout the area. Also known for its dark sky observations making it a popular destination for astronomers.
The location was beautiful. A nice sitting area to watch birds and wildlife. We saw javelinas, coyote, jack rabbits, quail , roadrunners and many more.
A fantastic cottage in every way! My Wife and I stayed a month and absolutely everything we needed was already stocked and available in the cottage; all we needed was our own clothes and groceries. Great setting for bird watching off the back porch thanks to a lovely bird sanctuary Mike and Rhonda created. Hosts gave us lots of help getting acquainted with the area. Free washer/dryer in the cottage was a great benefit to us. Excellent wifi; fully stocked kitchen appliances/pots and pans; roomy cottage floor plan. Highly recommend this remarkable cottage and hosts!
Rhonda and Mike were very friendly and helpful. The cute cottage accommodated the 3 of us easily. The back porch area provided excellent birding and was very private.
This is my third stay at Quailway cottage. I love staying at Rhonda and Mike's safe and comfortable Airbnb cabin. We grilled and made s'mores while the 4 of us good friends had a wonderful stay. Portal is a comfortable, low key, safe and beautiful place to take hikes, or just hang out. I really suggest this great cabin to stay. Enjoy the face that there is nothing that you'll need. It's all there and very organized. Thank you for being in one of my favorite places to go for a get away. My three girlfriends just thought it was great too. Kim, Rhonda, Tani and Magda
It was a very comfortable cottage. I appreciated the crystal clear windows that allowed me to get great photographs of the birds and wildlife visiting the backyard area. An oasis in the desert valley, the location is a great complement to visiting the Chiricahuas. If you are a birder you can get some great birds on the property, and it would be hard for anyone to not enjoy seeing all the quail and javelinas. The only downside was all the wildlife activity in the backyard made it hard to pull away from the back window in the morning to go look for wildlife in the Chiricahuas!
Conveniently located within 1 mile of Sky Island Grill and 5 miles from Portal Cafe and only 7 miles to the Coronado National Forest and Cave Creek Canyon. Nearest gas station is 25 miles in Animas, NM or 30 miles to San Simon, AZ. Small grocery selection available around Portal area. Larger stores within 50-80 miles.

Mike and I moved to Portal upon our retirement after 35 years in the nature center and zoo professions. Over the years we have worked directly with a variety of native and exotic animals. Earlier in his career, Mike was a sheriff’s deputy in Iowa then became an environmental educator when we moved to Louisiana. Being in environmental education Mike’s career involved working at a couple of nature centers and one zoo developing educational programs and special events. I always wanted to work in a zoo so my career has provided me experiences at three different zoos over the years. Some of my favorite animals to care for have been big cats which included lions, tigers and leopards. Although we are originally from Iowa we have worked in Louisiana and Texas as well. Because the Portal area has such diverse flora and fauna it was definitely a standout location for retirement. We have visited the Portal area a number of times and fell in love with the abundance of wildlife in the Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding area. It was an easy decision for us to relocate here and share our passion for wildlife with our guests. We enjoy traveling, hiking, camping and taking drives to observe wildlife. Mike’s favorites are the reptiles and amphibians. I enjoy all the wildlife but I’m partial to the mammals.
