We could not have stayed in a more perfect home for our stay. The Maetze house is truly a wonder. It is decorated with unique artifacts from Mexico and Panama. We loved the high celiings, the warmth of the original shiplap walls, and that gorgeous walk-in tub. The kitchen had everything we could need. Each bedroom has its own full bath! The view of green jays (yes green jays!) was so entertaining. The dark night sky view of stars was spectacular as we sat around a fire on a cool October evening. However, even this was out-done by a surprise greeting by NINE miniature donkeys as we drank coffee on the back porch! They were friendly and tame and just PRECIOUS! Next time we will rent all three houses because I cannot imagine a better place for a family reunion and nature retreat! And don't forget to eat at the family-owned Watering Hole in near-by Goliad's town square. Or a fascinating walk-through of Goliad's Oak Hill cemetary with its earliest inhabitants going back to just a few years after the Battles of the Alamo and Goliad including members of the Texas Calvary and veterans of the Confederate war. There is an HEB and Walmart less than 30 minutes away in Kenedy. And last but not least, the hostess, Claire, was a pleasure to deal with and very responsive. Thank you, Clare, for a truly MAGICAL stay! We will be back!

The Maetze House on the Barnhart Q5 Ranch is a truly wonderful place! My stay will certainly be uniquely memorable as I had selected it as the place for a surprise valentines getaway, and ended up in the initial onset of the great ice storm of ‘21. The house is absolutely beautiful, and one certainly feels at home there. The woodpile and fireplace necessities were well stocked; newspaper, dry kindling, and wood shared equal parts enhancing the romantic atmosphere and keeping the house a viable quarters in 25 degree weather, both fireplaces with their majestic hearths were roaring near 24/7. Claire is the epitome of hospitality, and she certainly knows how to let her guests know she cares for their welfare. If you have a problem or concern don’t doubt that she will do anything in her power make you feel at home. My girlfriend and I found a contented happiness sitting on the porch and watching the song birds galore come to the feeders at the front of the house. It seemed like the oak trees were loaded down with little red fruit that would come swooping down revealing themselves to be dozens and dozens of cardinals! They were joined by a full cast of green jays (neither of us had ever seen a green jay before in our lives), finches, sparrows, and doves! Some of the cattle came too and gave us a frolicking show all trying to out do the others antics. We certainly plan to return, and if you’ve never been, I wholeheartedly recommend you go visit one of the most beautiful ranch houses and ranches in all of Texas!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Maetze House. Such a wonderful way to relax and enjoy our time away from city living. The house is oozing with charm and had every possible amenity we could as for. The beds were super comfortable and we had lots of space to spread out and relax. We enjoyed hanging out on the front porch watching all the various birds who stopped by to enjoy the stocked bird feeders, including humming birds, green jays, woodpecker, red cardinals, doves and many many more. Provided in the house were binoculars, bird and wildflower guide books, games, historical info on the house and many other thoughtful touches. The kitchen included herbs/spices, filtered water, tin foil, teas, sweeteners, etc. Claire even left us some lovely flowers for us to enjoy. My teenaged daughter took great delight in hanging out in the hammock reading her book and she even slept in it overnight under the beautiful starry sky and then waking up to the donkeys that had come to visit. We enjoyed visiting with Claire and touring the property on the 4 wheeled vehicle. The cows were such a hoot as they got very excited to see us and the donkeys were such sweet gentle souls. The fire pit area was fully stocked with every possible thing a city slicker could need to get a blazing fire going. The star gazing platform and wildlife blinds were a nice touch. Wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you Claire!

TL;DR: This place is absolutely beautiful. It's a perfect, private, stress-free getaway. You can bring yourself, your partner, your dogs (no extra fee!) or your kids (heck, the whole family) and have an amazing time. Give yourself a break from quarantine, and while you're treating yourself you can feel good about supporting land conservation efforts at Claire & Wilfred's! My boyfriend and I booked a last-minute stay at the Maetz guest house. We'd been feeling like we needed a break from months of quarantine—the vibes were getting a little murder-y around the apartment—but didn't have the funds or ability to travel far. We also have the only dog in the world who absolutely hates long car rides, so Claire's seemed like the perfect spot. (Spoiler, it was!) I think another reviewer mentioned this, but the pictures don't do this place justice at all. We were surprised by how big and roomy the house is. And your hosts have thought of everything; all of the cooking supplies, plates, cups, etc; coffee, tea, filtered water, cleaning supplies, a big first aid kit, bug spray, hand sanitizer, toiletries, indoor and outdoor games, guide books, binoculars, plenty of towels, blankets, and bedding...and I'm sure a lot more I'm forgetting. Quiet mornings on the porch with my dog and a cup of coffee were perfect. We spent hours hiking around the property. We didn't leave the ranch all weekend, but never ran out of things to do or places to explore. We sought out the cows, donkeys, deer, rabbits, birds, and even got to meet the ranch dogs. Claire herself was so friendly, accommodating, and made everything super easy. In fact, we initially tried to book one of the other guest houses but someone else grabbed it right before we did (airbnb just hadn't updated quickly enough). Rather than cancel our reservation and tell us to try another one, Claire offered to put us up in the largest guest house for the same price (which was less than it would typically rent for.) And this is just one example of her kindness. Honestly, the most gracious airbnb host I've ever encountered! There was a small family staying in the adjacent guest house. At first I thought that would put a damper on our trip, but we only saw them maybe a handful of times. I barely noticed they were there at all. The way the houses are situated, and the fact that they don't share amenities, enables you to have a lot of privacy if you want it. Claire and Wilfred's house is a bit up the road from where you'll be staying. They give you all the privacy you want. We walked over to meet Claire but if you're the type that doesn't like to meet your hosts, that's totally cool too. And it's worth noting that they rent out the guest houses to help bring in money to manage the ranch, which has been in Claire's family for generations. It was nice to know that our little vacation was helping them out a bit as well! Bottom line: you don't need to look any further, and no more analysis paralysis. Just book your stay here. You won't regret it!
