The village of Sala Comacina lays on the western shore of Lake Como, at the foot of Monte Costone, and is one of the most distinctive location on the lake. Over the past century, Sala Comacina was already considered an important holiday location, as it can be seen from the many villas located on the lake.
One of these villas was owned by Cesare Beccaria, who hosted many famous literary figures, among them Alessandro Manzoni and Cesare Cantù.
The lake's only island, Isola Comacina, lays opposite the village and can be reached only by boat. On the Island, a fourteenth century Church of San Giovanni and the remains of the little Church of Sant'Eufemia, which dates back to the seventh century (with refurbishing in the eleventh century) are worth to be visited, as well as the local restaurant "La Locanda dell'Isola".
Another yearly event not to miss is the St. John festival (La Sagra di San'Giovanni) held the last week-end of June, with a lot of traditional food and beverage, and the fantastic, final fireworks show.
"One arm of Lake Como turns off to the south between two unbroken chains of mountains, which cut it up in a series of bays and inlets as the hills advance into the water and retreat again, until it suddenly grows much narrower and takes the appearance and the motion of a river between a headland on one side and a wide stretch of shore on the other...." (Alessandro Manzoni, The Betrothed).
Mentioned in Manzoni's famous verses that describe the scenery where his story is set, Lake Como is one of the most delightful places in Italy (and probably in the world). Also known as Lake Lario, Lake Como is situated in Lombardy, between Padana plain and the Alps; of glacial origin, it is the third largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. It covers an area of 146 square kilometers. It is one of the deepest lake in the Europe and reaches a depth of 426 meters near Argegno. It is shaped like an upside-down "Y" and the lower arms are known as Como (the one to the west) and Lecco (the one to the east) whereas the long northern part is known as Colico.
The Como branch is divided into three basins: the first is bordered by the city of Como, Moltrasio and Torno; the second ends between Laglio and Nesso and the third ends at Bellagio on Punta Blabianello.
Here You can see the famous Villa Blabianello, owned by FAI (Italian Foundation for the Environment). The lake's principal distributary is the River Adda, that descends from the Valtellina at Colico and then exits at the Lecco branch. Other rivers, that end at Lake Como are the Mera, the Varrone, the Pioverna, the Fiumelatte (the shortest river in Italy), the Liro, the Telo and the Breggia. Due to its Mediterranean climate, it boasts luxuriant lakeside vegetation with flowers like azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias and plants like olive trees and palms.
The only island on the lake is Isola Comacina, which is situated opposite a bay where a very good quality, though in limited quantity, of oil is produced. This area is called "Zoca de l'Oli"in local dialect.
On the east side of the lake, in the Colico branch, there is a small bay, which is so deep-set that it looks like a basin, called the Laghetto di Piona with the Cistercian Abbey of Piona rising from its promontory.
