Patrick is a wonderful person who will do his best to keep you comfortable if you communicate clearly with him. The dogs will keep you safe, but they are also very friendly. I was lucky enough to be invited to an event by Patrick, and I really enjoyed it.

We enjoyed our two week stay at Patrick’s place in Senior Quarters. He’s a friendly guy with an interesting backstory, and some great projects, including a sports program for youth in a remote area. We loved the wraparound balcony: having a bird’s eye view of the life of the quiet compound, and enjoyed getting to know the young neighbor and a few pets. The balcony was also great for hanging out hand washing. The living space is spare, but has all you need. Kitchen has a fridge and microwave and a few cups and plates. You won’t be cooking or serving a big meal, but it’s great for breakfasts and snacking. The shower is not an overhead shower, but it’s workable. We appreciated the hot water and the extra tank to store water in case of the water going out ( which it never did, but it was handy for washing clothes). Internet is by hotspot, so if you depend on reliable internet for work, it may not be enough. Overall, though, I highly recommend Patrick’s place.

Lovely apartment with a cozy terrace in a nice and calm area of Gulu. Felt very secure here and Patrick was always helpful if I had any issues or questions.

APPROACH WITH CAUTION! Its impotant that I let any prospective guests know what we experienced during our second stay at Bongomin's. I would first like to note the positives: 1) Great location 2) Secure compound with great guard dogs 3) Spacious master bedroom and en-suite bathroom Now, for the not-so-great part: 1) We decided to leave early as we had secured a new, long term home. I contacted Bongomin, requesting to change our dates (to leave earlier), which would mean that we would receive a refund for unused nights. His OWN cancellaton policy stated that 24 hours notice was required. Which we gave. He declined our request. When I asked why? he said, through messages: "You know the *local hotel* uses my place, as I had informed you. While you had occupied up stairs, they rejected to use the others, twice. They wanted the whole floor empty, as they usually gets. So your full paid stay days needs to compensate for that. My apology for that." My response: "Unfortunately, that shouldn't be something that I have to pay for, as its not our fault. When you informed me that you had an agreement with them, I had no issue with it. If *local hotel* were not comfortable to book, that is not our fault." His final reply: "Haha that is true. And it is true too, you leaving early, it is not my fault. The space is still yours until expiration date." I had to open a case with Airbnb to resolve the issue and finally receive my refund. It left us very confused as to why he believes lost income from other rooms, is a responsibility of his paying guests? 2) As mentioned before, this is our second stay at Bongomin's. Whilst I am fully aware of issues in Gulu in regards to water, I must say that 90% of both stays have had very poor water access/pressure. Resulting in bucket showers daily, washing dishes with water collected in the early morning and stored into containers. Water would only pour from the kitchen tap for approx 1-2 hours in the morning, with low pressure. Perhaps its due to the accommodation being on the top floor? Just be aware of this before booking. 3) When we arrived and opened the fridge freezer, there was maggot larvae, from what we think was left over ice cream in the freezer that had melted. Understandably, we didnt investigate what was in the container. To Bongomin's credit, he emptied the freezer straight away and did a quick wipe but we still had to do a deep clean of the fridge freezer ourselves to remove all of the larvae. Overall, I am truly disappointed in the way Bongomin dealt with us. I hope he makes adjustments to his own policy before the next booking, so that this doesn't happen again.
