Portør is a peninsula located far out in the Skagerak Sea. The area lies in a national park and is protected because of it's natural beauty. The landscape is dominated by exposed bedrock, polished smooth over billions of years by waves lapping at the shore. These are surprisingly comfortable to sunbathe on after a refreshing swim. It is a very safe and peaceful area where you can get back in touch with nature, and if you are an early riser, you can often spot wild roe deer that live locally, as well as hares and minks.
Portør may feel remote, but is only 40 mins to an hour away from several charming seaside towns; Kragerø, Risør and Arendal to name a few. There are local ferry services from Stabbestad (a 15 minute drive) that visit the islands of Skåtøy, Tåtøy and Jomfruland; a famous island with pebble beaches, two lighthouses and a unique landscape.
When staying in Portør, people often spend their days swimming, fishing, reading, cooking and playing games. It is also lovely to take a boat out for some mackerel fishing, or to visit some of the little islands dotted along the cost. If you prefer walking - there are long distance coastal paths that skirts Portør, and you can take advantage of the Norwegian right of way, which means you can explore the countryside freely. You can hire bikes locally and the national cycle route number 1 goes via the shop. There are also horse riding opportunities nearby.
In Portør there is a restaurant with rooms that serves delicious local fresh food. They also run several events in the summer and run concerts with well known Norwegian bands in July. There is a small ice cream and sweet shop a 10 minute walk away from the cottage. The closest supermarket is a 5 minute drive away (this is also walkable), and the shop sells gifts as well as a home goods and hardware department. Here you can also buy dry birch wood in 60l bags. There is a petrol station near the shop. At Stabbestad is the Kragerø spa resort, which you can visit for meals, but you can also purchase day passes for the spa and health suite.

A bus runs from Portør harbour several times during the day via Stabbestad (where you can catch the ferry to Kragerø) to Tangen. At Tangen there are frequent bus services to Oslo or Kristiansand. At Tangen you can also get a bus to Neslandsvatn where you can catch the train towards Oslo or Stavanger.
