Roam on the Range was cozy and our stay with Judy was great! The coffee and homemade granola in the morning was a nice way to start the day, and we slept great. About 10-15 minutes to the nearest grocery store, gas station, and a couple coffee shops; nice and easy. We were able to tag along on the Goat Walkabout, and had a lovely time herding the goats and learning about permaculture and all things nature.
Roam on the range is the perfect zen retreat for a little healing. Judy created this peaceful sanctuary to share , you will feel blessed to have this opportunity to spend time with this gracious and generous host. If you are looking for a magical experience, come stay at the farm, a rare find!
A fantastic place! I learned a lot from Judy, and witnessed her love and devotion to the farm and her animals! This is my second time staying with Judy and will surely return!
My husband and I were so lucky to find Judy’s amazing farmhouse in the Catskills when we needed a place to stay in order to attend a relative’s celebration of life. We felt so much at home in Judy’s farmhouse, and like we’d known Judy forever. She’s done so many interesting things in her life and lived everywhere from France to New Mexico. It was fascinating to learn about her latest evolution as a permaculture farmer raising goats, chickens, ducks and geese. She conducts what she calls a “goat walkabout” for anyone interested through which she brings people not only into direct contact with her goats but uses the event as a teaching opportunity to explain permaculture. The interior of her house is straight from the Pyrenees, so it was like taking a trip to Europe as well. Hobart is in a beautiful part of the Catskills. Cooperstown is about an hour away. The village of Hobart is known as one of the best “book villages” in the world – there are 8 bookstores on Main Street, ranging from antiquarian and rare books to children’s books and mysteries. We had an excellent dinner at the Bull & Garland gastropub in Hobart and a superb dinner that Judy so kindly invited us to for our last night at her place. We bought wine at Cellar Door Wines and Spirits, which has an excellent collection, also on Main Street. Judy served a wonderful breakfast of strong coffee, yogurt and her homemade granola. We learned so much about living a sustainable life, and only wish that we had some more time with the goats. Our walk was cut short by a much-needed rainstorm. Upstate New York has been suffering from a drought and the rain was welcome relief. Judy’s farm is an excellent place to learn important lessons on the impact we humans have on nature; we can’t wait to visit Judy and her goats again!
First quarter of adult life: Paris, doctorate, theater, marriage, children. Second quarter: New Mexico, children, teaching. Third quarter: Upstate New York, 30 acres of bliss. The challenge: producing healthy food for family and friends. The tango between the domesticated and the wild.
