Brixham is a historical fishing town built upon a limestone outcrop at the southern end of the Torbay coastline.
In 1851 Brixham boasted the largest fishing fleet in Britain and still remains one of the UK’s most important fishing villages. Pleasure craft now outnumber the fishing boats, with a wide range of yachts and luxury motor cruisers moored in a modern marina 5 minutes walk away, but the soul of the village is still true to its historical lineage unlike other coastal villages in the South West we’ve encountered.
The town is a hub for fine restaurants, old public houses and quaint shopping experiences. Its position on the edge of Torbay provides a perfect base for exploration - along the South West Coast Path (SWCP) which stretches out on either side, or over rolling hills inland to Dartmoor, or across National Trust heathland to ancient as well as more recent castles. Dartmouth and Kingswear are within a 15 minute drive and Totnes and Ashburton are 20 minutes and 35 minutes drive respectively.
It is a haven of escape from the modern world, a gateway to the world’s most beautiful bay and within reach of legendary beaches and tantalisingly hidden coves once only known to local smugglers.

The small village of Brixham is easy to navigate on foot or by bike. The famous SWCP runs either side of the town, opening up the famous coastline to enthusiastic walkers. A frequent bus service operates only 200 yards away from the town's main bus stop. And a ferry from the harbour can take you across to Torquay. But to explore in land, you'll be needing a car and whilst parking isn't easy in central Brixham, the lane up and behind Sommersway has always provided us with spaces only a couple of hundred yards from the house on Vicarage Hill. The main bus terminal is a 5 minute walk from the cottage so easy access to all surrounding areas.
