I have lived in Volcano Village for over thirty-eight years, but first came to Volcano in 1953, as a child, and visited Volcano, with my family, every few years, during the Summertime. I moved to Volcano in 1983. We've been offering vacation-rental lodgings, in our own cottages, for over twenty-six years. We host our cottages, making them homes-away-from-home, well equipped and stocked with the less perishable breakfast foods, with movies and documentaries about HVNP on DVD, a smart TV, in case guests subscribe to streaming services, with music CDs and a CD player, with books and maps about the island and HVNP, and, of course, 200 mbs Wi-Fi service. Since tourism shut down, due to the pandemic, for seven months or more, in 2020, we retired all but one of our cottages. I meet guests on the long entry porch (for mask-less greeting), after they check in (or during their stay, if they arrive late), offering tips about enjoying the use of their cottage and answering questions they might have. There is also a binder full of information about the cottage and the village of Volcano. We live about fifty feet/fifteen meters away from the cottage through the forest and are available, if guests have questions or requests, but we respect their privacy and do not disturb them, after our initial meeting, unless they ask for advice or aid or would just like to talk.
