Phil is a wonderful and helpful character. The room and the property has everything you need - in particular the room has good air conditioning and a good fan essential at the peak of the dry season. It’s not luxurious - it is excellent value for money - and an excellent base for the area. The shared bathrooms and kitchen are well maintained - and a good space for interacting with fellow travellers - in our case 4 Chinese travellers packing mangoes.
We stayed at Phil's place for 3 nights, and it was the best accommodation experience we had on our 6 week trip in the NT. His place is clean, comfortable, and the shared bathroom and kitchen were spacious, well equipped, and next to our private room (within the house). The fact that Phil's place is just out of town is a bonus, as it is very quiet, and you see lots of wallabies and birdlife. It is also convenient to visit the local tourist sights such as Katherine Gorge and Cutta Cutta caves. Add the fact that Phil is both friendly and very knowledgeable about local life and you have the perfect short or long term stay. Very strongly recommended.
Basic accomodation but a short drive to town and the gorge. The floor wasn't cleaned particularly well and there was cobwebs in my room. Phil and his other tenant tend to talk loudly a lot but weren't up late at least. Was a great place for wildlife, got close to kookaburras, wallabies and lots of butterflies by the creek
Now Phil's new bathroom is complete, it should be a great place to stay. Note that it is a share house and you have to go out into a public space to get to the bathroom; however, his longer term guests and friends who drop in are delightful to meet. Of my 9 nights in the NT, this one was the most memorable.
Had a great couple of days in Katherine, Phil was an excellent host, very knowledgable of the area and very friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to stay in Katherine and learn about the area, plants, cultures or animals.

Background in surveying/mapping the remote Territory and working with Indigenous people. Speaks Malay/Indonesian and communicates in local Aboriginal Kriol and Yolngu Matha.
