Authentic. Both the place and the hosts. The home is charming, well equipped and close enough to restaurants and amenities to be, at the same time, remote (in the best sense of that term), and not without the ability to sit down and have breakfast away from that annoying person you’re probably traveling with. Close to historically relevant places, and closer to the thing you’re likely looking for if you wanted to be on the high plains. Hosts are keen outdoorsmen if that is on your agenda. Highly recommend, and will definitely return as soon as I’m able.

We are always looking for unique places to stay when travelling with the family. This place was definitely that! So much history! Connie was wonderful to work with, always available, friendly, welcoming and informative. I don't know that we will ever have a reason to go back to that part of the country (we were there for a college graduation) but if so, this would be the first place I would try to get into again. This was a great place to celebrate the graduation, a wonderful house for the family and a relaxing setting, even if it was "a bit" off the beaten track!

Hart B Hunting Lodge is located on a working cattle ranch and is central to a number of birding hot spots, including Melrose Woods and Oasis State Park. We were warmly welcomed by Connie on our arrival and given an extensive tour of the lodge. Both Connie and Chris were extremely helpful and answered questions promptly. We located nesting Curve-Billed Thrashers right outside the building, and were told Great Horned owls also nest nearby. Additional species seen/heard include American Kestrels, blackbirds, Common Nighthawk, Bullock's Oriole, Yellow-rumped warblers, Northern Bobwhite, and Cassin's Sparrow. Playa lakes on the property have been affected by drought, however, a very large pond for livestock is being constructed in close proximity to the lodge building, in addition to a waterfall feature designed to bring water to the historic cottonwoods. Both of these features should be fully in place for fall bird migration. Our group is looking forward to a return visit this fall.
