Alma Libre is the perfect place to stay around Popoyo area. Don’t even question it! Not only is your room beachfront & private, you have Roger as a helpful and gracious host. I made use of the kitchen everyday and got two massages upstairs on the big yoga deck. They provide drinking water for their guests & cleaning of your room once or twice a week as you prefer. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves & watching the sunset from the yoga platform above the sand made my stay so memorable. I will absolutely be back and for longer next time! PS if you love kittens, there are many!

Great location, clean, friendly and just the best place in popoyo. Would recommend the place to everybody who is looking for a nice hideout by the beach.

Extremely disappointing! The listing states 4 ocean front units accompanied with attractive inviting pictures. Only 2 of the units are oceanfront. Roger and his girlfriend live in one. Leaving only one unit that resembles the majority of the Airbnb pictures. Then there’s a small old stone building that houses the other 2 units. I didn’t know any of this until I arrived. It’s not an easy place to get to either. After traveling all morning to just get to Rivas, Roger contacted me last minute offering to give me a ride from Rivas because he had to get groceries in Rivas that day. I was grateful!! It was a long slow drive half of it on bumpy dirt roads. He seemed like a nice enough guy & I was grateful for the ride. When we arrived I noticed an old stone building behind the one that’s listed. Its on the backside of the property & borders a dusty dirt intersection. I thought the building was for storage or laundry. When his girlfriend showed me to my room & it was in that old building I was horrified!! I’ve never had to leave a review like this & I hope I can post pictures because there’s too many words to describe my angst. In a nutshell there are no pictures of that building in Airbnb’s listing. There is a partial picture of the old heavy sliding door. I never saw where you could lock the place up from the inside, yet it’s listed as so. There is a padlock on the outside. As a senior female solo traveler I prefer to lock my door at night while sleeping. I couldn’t here tho. The unit is hot dark & stuffy with no ventilation. It’s also a fraction in size of the majority of pictures posted. There is no queen size bed, but rather 2 old lumpy twin beds pushed together with an obvious uncomfortable crack down the middle. Haphazardly hanging overhead is an old dirty mosquito net that hung half over the bed & half on the floor. There was also only a nightstand to put all of my things on. No shelves, hooks nothing. The faucet was about to come off the wall & the whole room was very dark, damp & stuffy. The front porch was small & narrow. There was an outside table & chair set. The cane woven chairs had holes worn through making them dangerous & useless. When I voiced my concerns to Roger he showed up with an old tv stand so that I could get my things that wouldn’t fit on the nightstand off the wet floor. He also brought over a small old desk lamp, although at night I still had to use my headlamp. Roger brought over a cheap plastic floor fan too that sounded like a jet readying for takeoff. I spent one sleepless night in that hot box, and only because I was too exhausted to look elsewhere. I’m super allergic to cats & Roger & his girlfriend have a pack of them. They’d be waiting for me to open the sliding unscreened door. So getting some fresh air was not an option. The cats were also on the thatched roof before the sun came up clawing away for something. Most annoying!!! The place was a total dump! The kicker is that a couple who were a walk in from the beach the day prior to my arrival got the nice unit in the front building for almost half of what I was paying via Airbnb. Roger thought he could make things right by giving me $28 & said he was going to have a guy come over to secure the faucet & try to fix the lighting. A man showed up earlier than the time I was told to secure the mosquito net?? That was never mentioned & Roger was nowhere to be seen. Roger’s young local girlfriend accompanied the fix it guy that didn’t seem to know how or where to secure the net. Meanwhile as the fix it guy is trying to figure things out, all this old lizard feces & dead bugs are falling onto the bed. Disgusting & I’m wondering where’s Roger. I tried via Google translate to tell the fix it guy that it was ok & that I wasn’t going to use the net anyways. The girlfriend & fix it guy left & all of a sudden Roger shows up in an angry rage accusing me of running his help off. What??? I didn’t know what was going on or what he was talking about. His angry outburst was not only shocking & disturbing but frightening too. He then drove off with his girlfriend in a huff!! I quickly packed my things & was out of there pronto!! Now left to find a place in a totally unknown (to me) beach area on a Saturday during peak season. It was not easy either. I walked 8 miles in the hot sun before the day was done. I did discover that Las Salinas is beautiful!!! I met some wonderful, thoughtful & empathetic hotel/resort owners & managers. Unfortunately no availability but I know where to go next time. By the end of the day I finally found a teepee for the night that was inland. Not exactly how I had planned to spend my last 4 days in Nicaragua after traveling the country for almost 2 months. Now I know that booking with Roger is a big gamble. If I’m going to gamble I’d rather do it in a casino & not with my holiday time & stays. Worse booking experience ever!!! I did request & received a partial refund!!
