Enjoy beautiful lake front northern MI, close to many "Tip of the Mitt" towns, trails, activities while enjoying beautiful Burt Lake, including our sunsets. Our guest house is on the second floor of our detached garage. It is at the end of a quiet road and is located off I-75 (exit 310 and 313), 3 miles from town, but 30-40 minutes from many other towns. Kayaks, small grill, camp fires on windless nights. No pets. Our guest house is a great spot for a couple or a small family getaway. Enjoy the peacefulness and the nature around. The space is 24'x28', plus the deck and bathroom. Only the bathroom/shower are on the ground floor, with inside stairs, plus a large private deck upstairs. We do have a small gas fireplace to take the chill off, ONLY if necessary, but we have plenty of extra blankets. There is no AC, but most nights cool off nicely. We do have 6 fans plus several windows. Enjoy walking in the neighborhood or on one of the many conservancy trails. We have a top-notch golf course near by, two good boat launches in Indian River (at IR Marina and at Burt Lake State Park). We have two great beaches in IR, Burt Lake State Park and DeVoe Beach, which also has a nice Veteran's Pier. Petoskey State Park is a 30 minute drive away. Regarding the sleeping arrangements, we have 1 full bed, a bunk bed with a single on top and a full on the bottom, and a sofa that makes out into a twin bed. (Warning, this sofa/twin is not the most comfortable for an adult...kids don't mind it.) Activities: There is a large network of limestone/paved biking and walking "rails to trails" trails, along with many lovely hiking recommendations within 3-15 miles. The National Catholic Shrine, Cross in the Woods, is an attraction many people appreciate visiting while in Indian River. For the adventurous, we have a challenging rafting/kayaking river and also a slow moving river for your pleasure. (Sturgeon and Indian Rivers, with rentals) Fishing is a challenging sport in Burt, Crooked or Mullet Lake for the avid fishermen. We can give you many suggestions for eating in the area, but don't forget to get your ice cream and fudge at Drost's or at the Dairy Mart. There is a large supermarket in town for your shopping needs (Ken's). We are just a short drive to many nice "Tip of the Mitt" towns in northern Michigan, each one unique and worth exploring. A great drive is the "Tunnel of Trees" on M-119. Two beaches are on Burt Lake, plus other beautiful ones that we can direct you to. We have a kitchenette which has a small refrigerator, small sink, small microwave, coffee pot, toaster, electric frying pan and dishes. There is room in our deep freeze if you need a small space for frozen foods. There is a TV for your streaming and we have a few VHS's you can use. Cable Wi-Fi. Warning: Zebra muscles are in most of the area lakes, which make the lakes very clean, and because of us living on a rocky point, the sharp zebra muscles cling to the rocks, so water shoes are recommended to avoid cutting your feet when walking in the water. Water shoes are available for purchase in some of the local shops. We do have two kayaks, but only for the "experienced" water people, and only if wearing PDF's (we will loan to you the PDF's). Please kayak only near the shoreline. Enjoy the beautiful sunsets from our shore as we face the west. We have a hammock and lawn chairs for your pleasure. Or you can walk out onto the end of our dock for an even more panoramic view. We do NOT have the facilities for docking or mooring of guests' boats of any size. The lake conditions can change very rapidly, as some have unfortunately experienced. Small campfires may be a possibility, depending on the wind and recent rainfall. Please check with us first. (2023-Due to a shoreline restoration project last fall, our firepit is not currently available). Also, if you need laundry facilities, please make advance request. We love dogs and cats, but we will say no to them coming here to our home, just for the protection of our furnishings and for other guests. Please do not ask. There is a pet kennel in town if you must bring your pet for hikes, boating, etc. Also, we have a big supply of pamphlets, maps and suggestions to help you with your planning after you arrive. We hope you enjoy your visit with us here.
Dorothy's place is in a beautiful location and central to so many interesting and beautiful destinations. Dorothy provides an amazing amount of information for things to do. We were here in mid-October, which is a little late for using the kayaks, but their location near a small bay in Burt Lake is a great spot. The space is quite big and very quiet, and Dorothy is a very friendly host. You won't run out of things to do!
We loved the location and space. We were within 25 minutes of Mackinac island, 25 minutes to Gaylord and about the same to Petosky, which were all 3 places on our wish list! 😁 it was private and we had access to kayaks, but the lake didn’t want us to kayak (way too windy), and she had lots of recommendations. They greeted us on our arrival, even though we got in kind of late.. which was nice! We would stay again!
We had a lovely stay at Dorothy and John’s place. There’s so much to do in the area and Burt Lake is beautiful. Great location for biking, hiking, kayaking, etc.
Great hosts, and a beautiful and peaceful location right on beautiful Burt lake. The place is actually more spacious than the pictures show, and very cozy. we took advantage of the kayaks to get out on the lake, which was a great amenity. perfect jumping off point for Northern Michigan adventures, and Dorothy was very generous with her knowledge of the area, both in person and with tons of brochures and maps.
Most of the people on our street are "snow birds" and love living here for the quietness and beauty of being up north. We appreciate any or all respect you have for all people living in the area, including driving slowly on our street.
Also, feeding ducks on our "beach" is highly discouraged, to help prevent swimmers' itch. Enjoy watching them, instead.
As mentioned above, a few other fun, active things to do in Indian River besides running: -bike, hike, tube, raft or kayak the Sturgeon River, visit the Cross in the Woods, eat ice cream/fudge, "Green Docks" swimming (on Indian River), golf on our top notch 18-hole golf course only 3 miles away, go to any of the neighboring towns (all about 30-40 minutes away) or watching the sunsets, ducks, boats in the water. Again, we have a booklet available for guests to use if they need ideas of what to do while in the area and dining suggestions as well as ideas for day trips from here.
Pellston, Traverse City and Sault Ste. Marie, MI are the closest airports. No convenient bus or train transportation. Flint airport is 3 1/2 hours away; Detroit Metro and Grand Rapids airports are 4-4 1/2 hours away.
