Cooks Beach is 2-1/2 hours drive from Auckland and situated on the East Coast of The Coromandel Peninsular. Traditionally the neighbourhood is very quiet with a permanent population of 500+ inhabitants. Figures change during summer months, long weekends and public holidays when numbers reach many thousands.
From Cooks Beach Lake Escape Studio it is only a 3 minute walk and you are on Cooks Beach! The beach is very flat, exceptionally safe for swimming at high or low tide and unless the weather is extreme surf is usually low. The studio is located on the edge of a delightful fresh water lake which has a footpath around the perimeter of approximately 1.2k. Walking around the lake you will see some of our local wildlife, with lots of birdlife and babies during the breeding season.
Cooks Beach is named after the famous British explorer, Captain James Cook. History books tell us that Captain Cook and his crew sailed to Cooks Beach in 1769 on the ship Endeavour. They stayed for 10 days anchored near beautiful Purangi River at one end of Cooks Beach. Try being adventurous and paddle a kayak up Purangi River, maybe visit a first class restaurant on the way? Or paddle/walk Cooks Beach (2-1/2-3k) to the opposite end of the beach to explore another beautiful estuary. Then wind your way up Shakespeare Cliff on foot or by car. Shakespeare Cliff towers above beautiful Lonely Bay, maybe walk the track down to Lonely Bay? When walking along Lonely Bay you can be forgiven for imagining you have just walked into a picture postcard! Magnificent pohutakawa trees grow along the waters edge, these trees traditionally called the New Zealand Christmas Tree. Their magnificent red foliage flowers in full bloom at Christmas time! From the top of Shakespeare cliff you see across wider Mercury Bay with many islands in the distance. Views are stunningly beautiful. Shakespeare Cliff is where Captain Cook observed the Transit of Mercury, hence the name Mercury Bay. Both estuaries at each end of Cooks Beach are within easy walking distance from the studio.
From Cooks Beach, a 10/15 minute scenic drive and you will arrive at the world famous Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach. A park-and-ride bus operates to and from the Cathedral Cove walk. Walking this track takes approximately 40/45 minutes to walk down, and perhaps a little longer walking back up. Many thousands of visitors and tourists visit the area annually. Note - there are no shops at Cathedral Cove so take a picnic and enjoy this world famous destination. You may like to be adventurous, hire a kayak and paddle to Cathedral Cove? Or maybe take a kayaking guided tour? Likewise, Hot Water Beach is as popular as Cathedral Cove and again, a 10/15 minute scenic drive from Cooks Beach and you've arrived at Hot Water Beach. A popular shop/restaurant is located at Hot Water Beach. A visit to Moko Art Gallery is recommended, to browse through beautiful and mostly locally made objects. You can dig your own thermal pool in the sand on Hot Water Beach and soak away the time! Your host will supply a shovel so you can dig your own thermal pool! The best time to visit Hot Water Beach is 2 hours either side of LOW water. Be careful of the water temperature, it can be very hot so caution is needed. Hot Water Beach has a reputation for being quite dangerous due to strong rips in the area so when swimming make sure you observe all signs and always swim between the flags!

A shuttle bus operates between various beaches over summer and there is an on-demand ferry operating from Ferry Landing which is a 3k drive or walk from Cooks Beach. Ferry Landing boasts the oldest stone wharf in Australasia, built in 1837. For a small fee and less than a 5 minute journey from Ferry Landing you can cross the estuary in the ferry and arrive at Whitianga, a town with population around 4,000. Whitianga has many cafes, restaurants, boutique shops, a twin movie theatre, doctors, dentists, and 2 large supermarkets. Scenic boat trips and daily fishing expeditions can be arranged fromThe Information Centre and Charter Boats can be hired. Most excursions will collect passengers from the Cooks Beach side of the estuary, at Ferry Landing. Public buses pass through Whitianga frequently to destinations further afield. A rental car company operates in Whitianga.
Driving to destinations away from Cooks Beach, the scenery is magnificent. Cooks Beach boasts many beautiful walking and cycle tracks with hiking trails for guests who enjoy the outdoors. For experienced hikers, a hike to The Pinnacles is a wonderful experience.
The list of things to do and see when visiting The Coromandel Peninsular is endless. The famous 309 Road snakes its way between Whitianga and historical Coromandel Town. The name is derived from the days of stage coaches, when stage coaches took 3hours09 minutes to travel the length of the 309 Road! You see spectacular scenery along the road and for most of the drive it follows a beautiful river. A word of warning, the road is very narrow, winding and unsealed, through thick native bush, but is well worth the journey. It features loads of natural beauty and plenty of Kiwiana along it's long and dusty road. A magnificent Kauri Grove with 13 natural specimens is a 10 minute walk from one of the car parks along the road and takes you back into the time capsule of New Zealand's past. Other highlights are serene waterfalls, a very quirky and ingenious waterworks theme park, but probably most famous of all is the attraction called Stu's Pig Farm. Stu is a barefoot legend. He loves animals and has been raising hundreds of pigs since 2005. Obviously they never go to market and are free to roam about and meet the tourists! You may even be lucky enough to be asked to name one of Stu's piglets! Who knows what other secrets this road is hiding! The 309 Road ends in Coromandel Town, another very picturesque small provincial New Zealand town, steeped in history.
