Catherine's place is very stylish and cool - we had a brilliant stay there for 3 days on Lamu island. It's about 5 minutes walk from the harbour front where everything is - once you've learnt your way through the narrow streets. At the house is Chengo who welcomed us and helped us during our stay, including cooking us a really delicious Swahili meal to eat on the amazing roof terrace. Lamu is great for the general vibe - everyone was very friendly and helpful and wanted to make sure we had a good time. It's a small place where everyone knows each other. And then it's only a 10-15 boat ride down to Shela, which is quieter and fancier and has great places to swim.

We enjoyed our stay at Catherine's house, the rooftop was nice and breezy and was a nice spot to eat and relax in the afternoons/evenings. Chengo was helpful in getting anything we needed or helping us to find places and things. We were not aware that we had to buy basic things like water, coffee, tea, spices etc. so verify what's available during your stay. Things in Lamu can be expensive because they have to be brought from Mombasa/outside. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay, everything was clean, Chengo is a great cook and provided very tasty meals at a per person cost.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Chengo, who manages the house, made us so welcome and couldn't do enough to make our stay comfortable. I can highly recommend this property

We are so happy we chose to stay at Catherine’s place. It is slap in the middle of Lamu old town and an oasis amongst the bustling streets. The house itself is spacious, well laid out with a huge and beautiful roof terrace that is perfect for napping, reading, meal times or working. Wi-Fi was surprisingly good! The real star of the show however was Chengu, the housekeeper come chef. He was a wonderful man and looked after us so well, cooked us delicious meals (the red snapper and jumbo prawns were fabulous), offered invaluable advice, helped us book different activities and always had a big smile on his face 😃 If you’re weighing up Shella or Lamu town, we would definitely recommend staying in Catherine’s house and visiting Shella for a day trip. We went by boat and motorcycle, both of which were fast and easy. We preferred the authentic experience of Lamu town though!
