(25 km north east from Agia Marina) Stavros (i.e. cross) is a seaside village located 17km northeast of Chania, at the northernmost edge of Cape Akrotiri. One characteristic feature of the area is the very steep camel-shaped mountain Vardies rising opposite the harbor of Stavros. The mountain is famous, because there were filmed scenes for the film “Zorba the Greek”, where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki Dance in 1964. Then Stavros was a humble small fishing village. Today the region has become a major tourist resort with many hotels and important tourist infrastructures. The two beautiful beaches of the area have contributed to the development of the area. The main beach is located east of the village, at the foot of the mountain Vardies, and next to the picturesque harbor. A semicircular lagoon is formed, fully protected by winds blowing in the region. The small bay has marvelous white sand and shallow turquoise water. The contrast of the wild mountain with the peaceful beach in the foreground makes Stavros a unique place for swimming. As expected, the beach is very well organized and provides all possible services. The second beach of Stavros is located north of the village, 200m northwest of the main beach. It has sand and rocks in places and is less organized than the first, but cleaner. The main drawback of this is that it is unprotected and the sea is usually wavy. At the peninsula dividing the two beaches of Stavros, you can see the remains of the ancient quarry, used for extracting limestone for building the Walls of Chania during the Venetian Era (13rd- 17th century). You find the cliff of Stavros at the end of Akrotiri. Stavros means cross, why the cliff has got this name is not easy to say. The cliff is used to one of the dramatic scenes in the movie : " Zorba the Greek " ( you can find it among the DVD'es in the shelf. At the foot of the cliff there is a little protected bay, an ideal little lagune with still water and this place is rather popular in the summertime. How to find it : Drive towards the airport of Chania. Just before the airport, you go left instead of right which would lead you to the airport. Then follow the signs for Stavros. While you are at Akrotiri, there are two monasteries to visit. The biggest one is very near the airport, too. The monks here grow olivetrees and wine and you can buy their products at the monastery. The other one is more isolated and futher away. Here you also find a path, rather challenging, which leads you to the sea level. Look in the internet about monasteries in Akrotiri.

Here was shooted scenes of the famous movie “Zorba the Greek” starring Anthony Quinn, filmed in 1964. At the beach, and against the backdrop of the hill of Stavros, Zorbas danced the famous Sirtaki, in music of a Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.

The mountain is famous, because there were filmed scenes for the Oscars winning film “Zorba the Greek”, where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki Dance in 1964. Visitors can go to Stavros using the buses of Public Bus of Chania-Rethymnon that follow the routes Chania-Stavros. Stavros is a coastal village 17 km northeast of Chania on the northern tip of the Akrotiri peninsula. The feature attraction of the beautiful beach of Stavros is a large steep mountain shaped as a camel. Scenes from the film Zorba the Greek with Anthony Quinn, who danced the famous Sirtaki in 1964, were filmed on this particular mountain. The contrast of the wild landscape of the mountain with its serene beaches make Stavros a place of exquisite beauty.
