Heart Lake sits above Castle Lake and is only accessible by foot. You will get some of the best views from up here of both Castle Lake and Mount Shasta. A must see. They recently updated the trail to make it easier and more accessible to others. Enjoy!

A great hike to a beautiful mountain lake! About 3 miles RT, it is moderate for active people, strenuous for less active, or elders. You access this trail from the Castle Lake trailhead (also listed in this guidebook), or just drive to the Castle Lake parking area and go left from parking area into trail. It can be tricky to follow this trail, as it's not well marked, but usually enough people here in warmer months to help guide you. Dogs are allowed on this trail. I recommend the AllTrails app, it does a good job of keeping you on trail.

Although short, the Trinity Divide’s Heart Lake Trail is a titan when in terms of scenery and vistas. Few trails offer as much alpine terrain and tremendous vistas for such little effort. Beginning at the Castle Lake trailhead, a worthy destination in its own right, the trail climbs to a craggy bench high atop massive Castle Lake. There, nestled into the rocky cliffs hundreds of feet above Castle Lake is small Heart Lake. Though diminutive in size, the lake offers one of the finest views of mighty Mount Shasta. Category: Moderate Distance: 2,0 miles Elevation Gain: 721 feet Route Type: Out & Back Directions: Follow signs to Castle Lake from the town of Mt Shasta. From Central Mt Shasta go west on Lake St, turn south on S Old Stage, Veer right at WA Barr Rd, cross Box Canyon Dam (Lake Siskiyou), turn left on the Castle Lake road shortly after the dam and follow the pavement to its end at Castle Lake. Highlights: Beautiful wild flowers when in season, views of Heart and Castle lakes
