This site dates from the 8th century and the expansion of the Moors. The position of the castle provides magnificent views. How to get there: (Info provided as per penapalacetickets.com) From Sintra Train Station >> "Once you get off the train head out to the street and look for Bus number 434. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site this 9th century Moorish castle has an unparalleled strategic placement on top of the mountain. Visit for absolutely breathtaking views, you can walk on the castles's walls from where you can see the Village of Sintra, The Pena Palace and even as far afield as Lisbon. I like to visit just before it closes when it's often quiet and you can see the sunset.
