Furness Abbey is a really stunning historic ruin with plenty of features to explore, plus a lot of green space around it to run about in and see it from all angles, or to play hide and seek. There is also a historically themed book box available in the Visitor Centre plus extra activities and resources are laid out in the education room during major school holidays. The height of the soaring red sandstone walls will surprise you and you can see why restoration work is being done to stop them sinking into the ground! There is some interesting information to discover in the Visitor Centre, plus there is a small museum, which has medieval treasure on display. These include a staff of office called a crozier and an impressive gilded silver ring set with a white stone that was found on the hand of a bishop in his grave. You can also see a remarkable collection of rare stone effigies. The many buildings that make up the abbey include the Precinct, Cloister Court, and Chapter House, the dormitory, kitchen and infirmary. With so many buildings still visible, you get a really good idea of how big it must have been when all in one piece.

Stunning ruins of a Cistercian Abby, once the second richest and most powerful Abby in England. Curated by English Heritage and worth a visit if you are heading to the beach and dunes at Sandscale Haws.

Historical ruin from a 1100 Abbey - one of the largest in England - very inspiring and worth a visit.

A must visit for history fans. Such a magnificent ruin with a museum to meander around. Great café just outside the Abby grounds for snacks and ice cream and great cakes. I recommend a visit.
