In the Esquilino quarter, in via Merulana, it preserves a semi-underground room decorated with frescoes, the only remains of the architectural complex belonging to Maecenas. The monument, traditionally known as Auditorium di Mecenate but in reality the ancient nymphaeum, is located within the public garden in Largo Leopardi (along the Via Merulana) and still well-preserved in its entirety; his discovery was made in 1874, through the major excavation work for the construction of the new district Esquilino, immediately after the proclamation of Rome capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

This monument is part of a more spacious complex identified as the country house of Maecenas, the political advisor of the Emperor Augustus who lived in the first century B.C. Maecenas is most famous for his support of poets and artists, hence his name has become the eponym for a "patron of arts". The painted decorations with Dionysian scenes and miniature gardens are gorgeous. Advanced reservation is needed here.

Affascinante la decorazione pittorica, effettuata agli inizi del I secolo d.C., che è ancora ben conservata.
