Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, south of Asheville. Relatively moderate, dog friendly, 1.4 miles round trip.

This breathtaking and otherworldly hike is my first choice, going early on weekday mornings to avoid crowds. After turning up the short drive, park on the side of the road at the top of the hill. The trail starts out as gravel on the right side of this road, in a fairytale grove of black balsams. A short way up the trail breaks out of the woods to a heathery tree-less terrain reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Up further is Black Balsam Knob, offering panoramic views to the horizon in every direction. Elevation 6214 ft Milepost: 420

When you think of views from the Blue Ridge Parkway, chances are these are the kinds of views that come to mind: the unimpeded, long-range vistas from Black Balsam Knob. Surrounded by wilderness, this tree-free ‘bald’ is an easy, family-friendly hike, ideal for picnicking or blueberry picking. Appalachian “balds” such as Black Balsam and nearby Sam Knob and Tennent Mountain are unique in that they are covered with grass and low-growing vegetation rather than alpine forests, which would be more common at such a high altitude (Black Balsam is at an elevation of 6,214 feet).

One of our favorite day trips with visitors -- exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP). You can loop up from Rosman (215) and down through Pisgah National Forest (276), go up & back through Pisgah, or up through Pisgah and take BRP to Asheville for a longer trip. Favorite spots include Devil's Courthouse, Skinny Dip Falls, Black Balsam Knob, Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower, and the Pisgah Inn. The Pisgah Inn is open seasonally -- the shop has sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and outside there are rocking chairs with a view. Note: In winter, the Blue Ridge Parkway is often closed to traffic (not maintained in winter weather); check nps website for updates. But you can drive and park at the parkway intersection, then hike or bike on the parkway without any cars!
