entre of Vendel (pre-Viking c.500-800AD) power. Large burial mounds. Fine medieval church stands on site of former pagan temple. Good museum/visitor centre. Nice walk from/to Uppsala centre.
This is a little bit outside of the city centre, but totally worth it if you plan on seeing some of the Viking heritage landmarks while visiting Sweden.
This is where the Vikings had their religious seat. Every ninth year, Viking chieftans have gathered here and sacrificed 9 male animals of each kind that was known to them and 9 male warriors too. The Old Uppsala cathedral is still standing here (beautiful medieval wall paintings). The cathedral was built on the place of an old Viking shrine. The highlight of the place is not the burial mounds which you can still see in the area but a great pub called Odinsburg. Here you can get a taste of real Viking mead (mjöd) brewed on the spot using the oldest known recipe. One bottle will cost you 60 SEK and since it's a bit of an acquired taste, don't buy more than one bottle at once. Try their Belgian waffles too. They are yum. :)
