On the Capitoline Hill stands the Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo in 1536 on commission from Pope Paul III. Michelangelo made an elegant podium for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and designed an imposing staircase with wide steps, which allowed easy ascent even for horsemen. Around 1546, Michelangelo created the facade of the Palazzo Senatorio, which houses the city's City Council, with a two-flight front staircase, frames the splendid fountain.

The office of the Maior, the bronze statue of the Shewolf breastfeeding, baby Romolus and Remus. In the middle of the square, designed by Michelangelo, there is the equestrian statue of Marc Aurelius. From the lookout behind the square, you have a spectacular view of Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatinus

Unbelievable, but true! Until the 1960s, an eagle and a she-Wolf, the symbols of Rome, were locked up in a cage at the foot of the Campidoglio Hill.

The Campidoglio, is the smallest of the seven hills of Rome and is the hill on which Rome was founded. The Campidoglio is also the seat of the municipality of Rome. The square is surrounded by three palaces: the Palazzo Nuovo, the Palazzo Senatorio and the Palazzo dei Conservatori. The three house the Capitoline Museums, a very rich collection of finds from ancient Rome.
