The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, or Ballard Locks, is a complex of locks at the west end of Salmon Bay, in Seattle, Washington's Lake Washington Ship Canal, between the neighborhoods of Ballard to the north and Magnolia to the south.[2]: 2 [3][4]: 6  The Ballard Locks carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the US, and the Locks, along with the fish ladder and the surrounding Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens attract more than one million visitors annually, making it one of Seattle's top tourist attractions.

The locks are only a pleasant ten-minute walk away. You can come for a stroll or to check out the boats coming and going. Across the locks is a small park where Great Blue Herons like to roost. If you are lucky, you might spot a sea lion or a seal! There is also a Salmon Ladder where you can see fish during migration.

Quite an unusual sight! This is where boats go back and forth from sea water to Lake Union through a series of "locks" where water fills up and empties in big holding pens to account for the change in water level of the two bodies of water.

Our mini version of the Panama Canal, and check out the fish ladders during salmon season. A Must See!

A "must see" when you're in Ballard. Watch the boats change elevation to move in and out of Lake Washington from Puget Sound. There's also a fish ladder that's very active during the salmon spawning season.
