The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Salah ad-Din is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries.
This Citadel, one of Cairo's most iconic landmarks, was the seat of the Egyptian government since the 1200s until the advent of Modern Egypt around 150 years ago. One of the most well-known symbols of Cairo is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, whose eponymous builder is widely considered to be the founder of modern Egypt. You will have great view of Cairo from the Citadel, and, on a clear day, you will even be able to see the Pyramids, 16 kilometers (10 miles) away!
