A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress was built after the British occupation of Havana in 1762. It tells of Havana’s maritime history: the shipwrecks, the battles, the commercial trade of the colony. It’s easy to spend all afternoon here walking around and taking in the unparalleled views of old Havana, the bay, and the port. Every night there’s a canon celebration. A town crier sings to announce the closing of the city before a nocturnal attack by pirates. At exactly 9 pm, the ceremony culminates with the simulated blast of a cannon, the sound of which rumbles across the entire city.

Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress is located in a hill in the eastern side of the port of Havana. This vast fortress was erected in the 18th century, between 1763 and 1774, as way of protecting the weakest spot of the city’s defense system. Nowadays, the fortress is restored to welcome tourists and it can take as much as a whole day to visit it all! You will find plenty of bars, restaurants, souvenir stores, and the world’s largest tobacco store here too. The fortress also houses the Museo de Fortificaciones y Armas (Fortress and Weapons Museum) and the Museo de la Comandancia del Che (El Che’s Headquarters Museum). Everyday at 9pm, the cannon is fired in a ceremony where actors dressed in period costumes from the 18th century fire the cannon over Havana’s port, which was the signal, until the year 1850, of the closing of the city’s gates.

Ever since the 18th-century, a cannon has been fired in Havana every evening at 9pm at the Fortaleza San Carlos de la Cabaña (Fort of St Charles). Back then, Havana was divided in two and Cuba’s Spanish rulers would fire the cannon to inform the Habaneros to take shelter against pirate attacks. Today, the nightly event is still quite a spectacle, equipped with a drum roll and artillery cadets lining the fort dressed in colonial uniforms. The event is free, always on time, and onlookers are encouraged! This is one of the lesser-known things to do in Havana.

Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, better known as La Cabaña, is the largest Spanish colonial fortress in the Americas. It was built between 1763 and 1774 on a long, exposed ridge on the east side of Havana harbor to fill a weakness in the city's defenses. These days the fort has been restored for visitors, and you can spend at least half a day checking out its wealth of attractions. There is a very popular evening ceremony in which actors dressed in full 18th-century military regalia reenact the firing of a cannon over the harbor, the nightly 9pm cañonazo. This ceremony is every day, no matter the weather condition.
