It was once the largest shipyard in the world, but in the 1980s the 'Nederlandse Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij' went bankrupt and the site on the north side of the IJ became vacant. Today you imagine yourself here in Brooklyn or Berlin, because the messy wharf with its rusty sheds and unruly concrete has become the ideal backdrop for a new generation of creatives and entrepreneurs. Festivals take place here all year round, there is an impressive Street Art museum and at the coolest catering spots you can enjoy the great view over the water and the city... Shopping

Convenient for daily groceries close to the house is shopping center Buikslotermeerplein/Winkelcentrum Boven 't Y. It is just past the metro that takes you to the city center. I don't recommend it as a special sightseeing attraction, but handy and a better priced than the shops in the city center.

From souvenirs, jewelry, fabric, food, and traditional Dutch products like fresh stroopwafels and herring, to clothing and much more, this market has something for everyone. The area is filled with cafes and restaurants, but there's also a good selection of local food in the market itself.

Of huur fietsen!
