John O’Brien came to Greenville and East Carolina University (ECU) in 1985. He is a Professor of piano at ECU and he also serves as organist and choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church in Kinston. Both of his parents are pianists and his three brothers are all string players. He grew up studying piano, violin, flute and harp and playing string quartets with his brothers. He was most privileged to study piano with his father from the age of five until graduating from high school. Dr. O’Brien is fortunate to have played for many famous (and not so famous, yet all wonderful) musicians in churches and concert halls all over the region and country. It is however his work in the community and in particular with the EasternYouth Orchestra (1986-2021) that he values most of all. Interestingly the most famous musician he can claim association with today is a former EYO student--Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw. "The Music House" hosts a concert series and numerous other community events. When John is not practicing, or performing or teaching music he is usually working on his house, his yard or most often hosting a group or individual.
