REFER CANOPY CAMPING Enjoying Qualmark 4 star status, Iona is a luxury tiny house getaway on the riverbank in Whanganui city, made from the historic Kauri hull of the 100-year old boat Iona. Whether you want to wander the round the bridges walk, explore our heritage old town, or just watch the river go by from the deck or hot tub, Iona is private and magical. She is a self contained, with log burner, made for two with a beautifully crafted interior and 180 degree views of our majestic awa. Iona is utterly unique. Made just for one or two people, the house is warm and intimate, with high quality finishes and linens. She was made for relaxing -reading by the fire, soaking up the city lights in the hot tub, enjoying a wine on the deck, or strolling round Whanganui's river bridges. We guarantee you'll love your time here.
What an amazing and unique experience! We fell in love with the property, and It's very obvious that Elinor takes immense pride in it! The floor to ceiling windows frame a gorgeous riverside view. On a chilly night you can sit by a fire, or enjoy the hot tub to some relaxing music. The town center is a short walk away with some great restaurants and cafes, or you can rent a bike from the shop directly across the street. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Don't miss out on this place!
Wow! Iona is simply beautiful. This was our favourite Airbnb so far and the hot tub was a real bonus. Stunning location and what a treat to stay in a converted workboat. Would definitely recommend.
The most unique airbnb I have ever stayed and everything was great. Loved the location, the outdoor setting overlooking the river and the hottub was perfect. Would definitely stay again.
Our historic city is a buzzing mecca for artists, so everything's low key and unique. Putiki is a central suburb, one steeped in Maori culture as just downriver is the Marae of our Tupoho iwi, and the historic St Pauls Memorial church. In just 600mm you'll find yourself on our main street where there are plenty of eating and drinking venues to enjoy, and on Saturdays our fabulous River Traders Market. You're right on the Mountains to Sea cycleway too, and 5min from the airport and the wild South Beach on our glorious West coast. While in Whanganui you mustn't miss a trip on the river, by kayak or paddle steamer, or a visit to the historic Sarjeant Gallery.
For those who want a deeper Whanganui experience, get in touch and let us arrange one on one experiences with the local Waka Ama paddlers, guided river and/ or fishing or hunting experiences, introductions to local wild foods, artists or craft makers, or walking tours of our rich Maori and European heritage.
Putiki Drive is just one turn off the Palmerston North - New Plymouth highway, and runs right past our main street, Victoria Avenue, so you'll have no trouble finding the Iona at no. 52 in a couple of hundred metres from the main road - just look out for the big boat! If arriving by State Highway 4 via Taumarunui, you'll see that Putiki Drive is actually part of SH4.
There is plenty of parking on site. Cycles can be secured to the posts on the deck behind the house.
Our helpful Isite is on Taupo Quay, just over the bridge from the Iona. You can hire an ebike just across the road, but you'll only need feet to explore central Whanganui. If coming via river, you can paddle right to Iona in a few relaxing days - just talk to your river operator.

We are a professional couple with two school age children. Hamish was born and bred in Whanganui, and is now our Mayor, while Elinor, an Architect, runs a small design-focused practice here. We love our garden, spending time with the kids, good books and travelling when we can. Hamish is a cricket and football nut too!
