This unit is a bay view condo sitting directly on Choctawhachee Bay, where you will find jet skiing, windsurfing, inshore and offshore charter boat fishing, and pontoon boat rentals with excursions to Destin’s Crab Island. As you look out from your fourth floor balcony, boaters on all types of watercraft can be seen daily frolicking in the bay. If you look straight down at the sandy bottom of the bay from your balcony, you may even see redfish and groups of stingrays swimming in the shallow water!
Exiting the Destin West Complex, drive west (turn right) and you will find local restaurants and area attractions including arcades, go-carts, mini-golf, the Gulfarium, and a public Fishing Pier with Boardwalk. There are weekly fireworks (Wednesdays at 9pm) on the beach during the summer. The BOARDWALK includes shopping and restaurants, with live music, dancing and entertainment nightly. (Rockin’ Tacos shrimp quesadillas are my personal favorite!) Just across Brooks Bridge further to the west is historic downtown Fort Walton Beach with a rich Native American history museum and many fine local bistros including Fokker’s Pub and Burrito del Sol.
Exiting the Destin West Complex, drive east (turn left) and you will see the Scenic Coastal Dunes of the Gulf Islands National Seashore which separates Okaloosa Island from Destin Pass. Cross the Crab Island Bridge at Destin Pass and you will come upon Destin Harbor, which offers fishing charters, excursions, and an array of Seafood restaurants. McGuire's Irish Pub is a very popular destination restaurant for locals and tourists alike. This bustling eatery has live Irish music nightly and has its own souvenir shop next door. Only a 5-10 minute drive from there is Big Kahuna's, a favorite waterpark for people of all ages; along with The Track, a large family entertainment center with arcade, mini-golf, bungee jumping, and of course--a large, multi-story spiraling go-kart track.
To the north of the bay is Eglin Air Force base, which houses the Armament Museum--open daily and free to the public. All year round you can witness the daily sights and sounds of our mighty U.S. Air Force flying overhead while you relax on your balcony overlooking Choctawhachee Bay.
Favorite Restaurants in the Area: to the west--Ali’s Bistro, Giovanni’s, and Clemenza’s in Fort Walton Beach; and Stewby’s, Fubar’s and AJ’s on Okaloosa Island. To the east--Thai Delights, McGuire’s, Dewey Destin’s, and Boshamps in Destin. Whataburger has multiple locations in the area and is open 24 /7 and also serves breakfast choices from 11pm to 11 am.

Destin West Beach and Bay Resort sits on a stretch of Okaloosa Island between Choctawhachee Bay to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. The complex is so named because it is comprised of TWO separate resorts, a beach resort and a bay resort. With wristbands, guests of each resort can access the amenities of the other.
My condo is located in the bay resort, Destin West Bayside, which sits between the Bay and Hwy 98. Please only park in the bay resort parking lot. Parking is accessible in outdoor striped spaces as well as under the bay resort in a ground level parking garage.
The bayside resort includes four separate condo buildings including Heron, Osprey, Sandpiper, and Pelican that surround the Lazy River and picnic area. My condo is in the Heron building. There is a private bay pier for Destin West guests to fish or dock a boat protected by a gate and code (available inside the unit). Just next door to the Heron property is Rick's Bar and Restaurant which serves fabulous local seafood and pub food for both indoor and outdoor dining, for lunch and dinner, along with daily entertainment and multiple TV's for sports games.
The beach resort, Destin West Beachside, is across the street and sits between Hwy 98 and the Gulf of Mexico. To get to the beach resort from my bay side condo, there is a separate elevator/stairway in the front office complex that will take you to the third floor walk-over to the beach. Carts and strollers are allowed. This walkover arches over the highway and is for your safety. PLEASE DO NOT CROSS THE HIGHWAY AT GROUND LEVEL! It is very dangerous! The amenities of the beach side (remember, you need your wristbands) include a pool and hot tub.
Destin proper is just a short four mile drive to the east and across the bridge. On your drive to Destin you will pass four miles of the scenic untouched sand dunes of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Destin is known for its restaurants, shopping and Destin Harbor. The beaches and highway in Destin are more crowded than Okaloosa Island because of the multitude of high rise condominiums there. In Destin there is much more land area between the Gulf and Hwy 98 which allows the high rise condos to be stacked the whole depth of the beach.
Eglin Air Force Base just north of Choctawatchee Bay restricts Okaloosa Island condos to a height of 7 floors, and the beaches on Okaloosa Island allow for only one condo or hotel between the Gulf and the highway.
