Mario is charming and accommodating, a good host. Friendly and knowledgeable. He met us at the ferry and helped us get set up. The apartment we received was not the one we booked. It was nice and he said an upgrade, but that kind of rotation in AirBnB is uncomfortable. AirBnB guests are strangers in a new town. AirBnB requires the guest to cancel and pay a fee if there is a change. Looking at Mario’s reviews, we decided not to cancel and not to incur a fee, but to make the change he offered. We were happy with that, but it is an unnecessary risk. Looking at Mario’s guest comments on AirBnB, this seems to be a regular issue for Mario’s bookings. He manages many properties locally. Several guests have booked one location but on arrival received another. This wasn’t an issue for us, we are flexible, but others might not be. Caveat emptor. Mario is a true local in Marettimo, his parents run a well reputed B&B called “Il Corallo”. They are well established. I think it is unlikely a guest would grave a bad experience. Mario has many properties he is managing. This a positive to me but might be an issue for some visitors. Marettimo is a beautiful place. A fishing town out of the 40’s that has changed little so far. Families gather at the cafe Il Scarletta overlooking the port, and La Tramontatta overlooking the castle, to talk and sing in the evenings. Kids sell shells in the street. Truly an escape from the ultraturismo one finds elsewhere in Sicily.

The photos really don't do the flat justice. The L-shaped terrace is huge, giving spectacular sea views to the front and views of the lush mountain behind, and offering both sun and shade all day. The interior is basically equipped and furnished, but clean and comfortable. The double bed is wide and comfortable and dressed with spotless linen. The shower cubicle is quite small, so maybe wouldn't suit the larger figure. The seafront is just a 3-minute walk down the hill. There are a lot of steps on the way back up, so good for toning the legs! The village is compact but offers everything you could want: 5 or 6 great restaurants (we particularly recommend La Scaletta), small grocery shops, a fantastic deli for local delicacies and meat (La Cambusa), a bank, a bakers, a gelateria, a post office and medical centre/chemist. If you want to buy fish to BBQ on the terrace then buy it straight from the fisherman first thing in the morning at either of the two harbours. A visit to the Norman castle is a must. It's about an hour and a half's trek along a path cut high into the rock and offers amazing views. Or you can a water taxi there if you don't have a head for heights. There are several lovely shingle beaches to be found in rocky coves. The water is crystalline – all the better for spotting jellyfish! It's a great place for snorkelling and you can do Scuba courses here, too. Mario was the perfect host – it felt like having a friend on the island and he was always there to help us with anything we needed. We particularly recommend a boat trip round the island with his father Franco to see the caves and swim. All in all a wonderful experience and we were very sad to leave.
