Irsina (known as Montepeloso till 1895) retains its old Norman walls, with a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, arches and gateways dating back many thousands of years. Around every corner is a surprise - be it small churches, the large Cathedral, old palazzo, small squares with fountains, cantina still filled with stores of olive oil and wine.
Irsina boasts a good array of traditional Italian bars and cafes and a choice of restaurants all within walking distance of Kestrel's Nest. Also within walking distance are bakeries, butchers, green grocers, patisseries with that day’s produce, while a number of small shops and supermarkets provide all the basics.
Irsina with its wonderful panoramic views across rolling hills of wheat, its olive groves and vineyards lends itself to walking, hiking and cycling, or to just sitting and admiring.
Exploring beyond Irsina
Irsina and Kestrel's Nest are ideal for visitors to base themselves to tour much of the south of Italy.
Less than 45 minutes away is Matera, whose Sassi - the caves where people have lived from the dawn of time- and its UNESCO World Heritage Rupestrian churches, were brought to international prominence when the city was chosen in 2019 as European City of Culture. More recently it has been the backdrop to the latest James Bond film, "No time to die ", where its amazing landscape was among the stars on screen.
Irsina is surrounded by many other interesting towns in Basilicata and Puglia, such as Alberobello with its picturesque trulli while the sandy beaches of the Ionian and Adriatic are little more than an hour away, including the delightful Monopoli which also boasts a stunningly beautiful cathedral.
The Lucanian Dolomites offer a range of attractions from skiing when conditions are right to the famous 'Volo dell’Angelo' (Angel’s flight) zip-wire flight, and the 'Ponte alla Luna' (bridge to the moon) a Tibetan-style bridge over a deep ravine.
Basicata and Puglia boast many fine vineyards including those around the defunct volcano near Melfi which can be visited and its red aglianico and primitivo, its whites and sparkling wines can be sampled.

Irsina is a little more than an hour from Bari international airport, a little longer to Brindisi (2 hours 15 minutes) and Naples (2 hours 35 minutes). There is public bus and train transport, but renting a car gives greater flexibility. Airport transfers can also be arranged.
