Wonderful few days at this gorgeous house. Really well equipped (cooking, reading, games, hot tub etc). Perfect for what we needed. Cows mooing in the next field and cheeky chicken running around. Lovely.

Local Information
Welcome to the West coast of Cumbria, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Well known for its scenic landscape, great attractions and wide range of outdoor activities right on your doorstep
Hayton is conveniently located between the coast of West Cumbria (2 miles) and The Lake District (12 miles), which have some of the best scenery in Europe, and is ideal walking and cycling country. There are too many to list but here are just a few
Every Thursday & Saturday Keswick hosts its market in the town centre. From freshly cooked food to jewellery and clothing, there is something to suit everyone.
The border city of Carlisle is a 30 minute drive away, or catch the train from Aspatria, (1.5 miles) lots to see and do! Scotland is 40 minutes away
Outdoors
Turn right out of the house then take the right turn in the village and you will be at the beach in 5 minutes! Drive or walk to Allonby and treat yourself to an ice cream at Twentyman’s or a HUGE portion of fish and chips at The Codfather. There is a great cycle path from Maryport to Silloth, where bikes can be hired from Allonby
The Hadrian’s Wall Coast to Coast cycleway which stretches from Whitehaven to Tynemouth runs along the coastline about 2 miles from the house, down a quiet country lane.
In the local area, the route is along dedicated cycle tracks along the coast, from Maryport to Allonby, which is An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with fabulous views across to Scotland
If golf is your bag, then try Silloth, Brayton Park Aspatria or Maryport courses, but do book ahead. They tend to be quieter mid afternoon. The restaurant at Silloth and Aspatria golf clubs are also worth exploring. I have no feedback as yet to Maryport Golf Club
Silloth
Solway Coast Discovery Centre, Silloth The exhibition showcases the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its special wildlife, heritage, landscape and communities. Take a wander from the Ice Age to the present day, find out how things changed when man came here
From Romans to Normans and monks to industrial giants – and discover the area’s natural beauty
Motorcycle Museum, Silloth. Free to enter, Motorcycle Museum conveys the passion of owner Jim Snaith who raced for over 40 years. Packed with memorabilia the museum is a must-visit for all motor-racing enthusiasts
Silloth Promenade
Silloth is a well preserved Victorian seaside town, with a big town centre green and long, flat promenade. Starting from the Solway Coast AONB Discovery Centre, head towards the Green and sea which brings you to the Promenade. Turn left along the Prom and enjoy the fresh air and extensive views across the Solway Firth to Scotland. The large hill across the Solway is Criffel.
Enjoy a gentle stroll until you reach the RNIB lifeboat station and turn left by the side of the Green and into town. Turn left opposite the Golf Hotel. Criffel Street is a fine cobbled thoroughfare showcasing Silloth’s street grid pattern and fine houses with unrivalled views out to sea. Follow Criffel Street until you reach the Discovery Centre on your right.
Walk along the right of the promenade to meet a 2.5 mtr sculpture of a local man and his dog, named Sunset
There is also a vintage slot machine arcade, a children’s park area, a fairy trail, bmx track, and plenty of park land for the kids & dogs to have a run around
Silloth Golf Club
Has a great reputation as being challenging and one of the best in the country!
Solway Coast Circular Rides
The Solway Coast is loved by cyclists because of the variety of the landscape, the flora, fauna and the history to enjoy along the way. It’s flat, but not boring. With lovely villages, and fabulous views to the Lakes, and then out over the Solway Firth, to Scotland. If you are looking to hire a bike then a great local option is Solway Cycle Hire in Allonby. The AONB Discovery Centre in Silloth has a free pack of five cycle routes to enjoy.
Maryport
Senhouse Roman Museum, Maryport
The Romans shaped much of the landscape of West Cumbria – this is a place with a fascinating past. This museum displays the largest group of Roman military altar stones and inscriptions from any site in Britain, as well as unique examples of Romano-British religious sculpture. From
the viewing tower, you can also see where the major Roman Fort was at this, the Western end of Hadrian’s Wall.
Maryport Maritime Museum
Maryport’s rich maritime history is on display throughout this harbourside museum. It details the town’s strong links to Thomas Henry Ismay, the founder of the White Star Line who built the ill-fated Titanic. There’s also reference to the acclaimed artist Percy Kelly with one of his striking works on display
Lake District Coast Aquarium, Maryport
Get hands on and discover the wide variety of native species which swim off the shores of the Solway coast. The harbour side attraction offers proper family fun indoors, with a nautical-themed adventure playground and mini golf outside. There’s even a bait shop for those who want to go fishing along the Cumbrian coast. The sunset is amazing from Maryport and all along the west coast.
Lake District Coast Aquarium, Shiver me Timbers, Cave at The Wave, & Clip & Climb, West Coast Carting, lots of activities for all the family
Cockermouth is a pretty Georgian market town with a tree-lined Main Street. You will find a range of interesting independent shops including butchers, bakers and a bookshop, gift shops
Jennings Brewery tour and shop, Cockermouth
They have been brewing these famed ales in the historic market town of Cockermouth since the 19th century and still use their own spring to provide the water for their classic beers. Find out more on the tour with the experts, sample their wares in the brewery bar, have lunch on the riverside terrace, and pay a visit to the great shop
Cockermouth festivals and events
First of all, Cockermouth is noted for its Taste Cumbria Cockermouth festival, a major food event held every September and December. Likewise, visitors enjoy its range of events. Northbound, is a free summer music festival and the Malcolm Wilson Rally starts in the town every March. Two stages of the 2018 Ovo Energy Tour of Britain visited the town on 5 and 6 September 2018. Thousands of people come along to support their favourite racers
Birthplace of Wordsworth
The town is probably best known as the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth. Their father’s grave can been seen in the town’s All Saint’s churchyard. Their home, Wordsworth House, is now in the care of the National Trust and provides a fascinating insight into how the future poet and his family lived in the 18th century.
2020 marks the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth’s birth.
Famous sons
Other famous Cockermouthians include Fletcher Christian, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame and the astronomer Fearon Fallows. Scientist John Dalton of atomic theory fame was born in nearby
Eaglesfield. Cockermouth Civic Trust’s Town Trail provides a fascinating insight into the history of the town.
Cockermouth Golf Club is one of the finest 18 hole courses in Cumbria. Established in 1896, James Braid, a world renowned designer, created the PGA rated course, which is both a challenging test of golf and enjoyable for players of all abilities.
Another must visit is the Kirkgate Centre with its eclectic mix of performance, music and film. Castlegate House Gallery is also a culture pick, specialising as it does in 20th century and contemporary British art.
Cockermouth is noteworthy for its independent shops. You can browse the books in the bookshop, try some tasty local food, or delight in the fun to be had at the toy shop. Cash in the attic? The town also has a wealth of antique shops.
Finally, for walkers, the John Dalton Way is a 45km route commemorating the local lad who went on to formulate atomic theory. He was born in the hamlet of Eaglesfield in 1766. The walk takes you through the lovely villages and countryside between Cockermouth and the coast.
Cockermouth restaurants, cafes & pubs
Cockermouth has a well-deserved reputation for great food and drink. It has Traditional Cumbrian pubs such as the Bitter End and cafes that include the Coffee Kitchen, Wild Zucchini’s and the Moon and Sixpence. If you’re looking for something a bit more exotic Cockermouth offers Indian (Spice Club), Chinese / Thai (Bamboo) and even Turkish (Aspava). The Quince and Medlar shouldn’t be missed if you’re looking for a fantastic, fine dining vegetarian option.
Keswick is known as the outdoor centre of Britain and has more outdoor clothing shops than you could shake a walking stick at! One of Keswick’s most famous attractions is the Theatre by the Lake. Set on the shores of Derwentwater its variety of classic, modern and new plays, literature, jazz and film festivals is a great way to spend a daytime or evening. The town also has a century old cinema, the Alhambra which shows new films with a state of the art surround sound and projection systems.
You could also explore some history during your visit, with Keswick’s Museum and Art Gallery, Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum
For a rainy day with the kids (hopefully you won’t have many – rainy days that is!) you could try the Puzzling Place, Kong Adventure Centre, or the Rheged Centre in Penrith (a 20 minute drive from Keswick), home to a giant 3D cinema, pottery painting, art gallery, cookery school, cafes and children’s workshops.
Keswick is well known for its surrounding lakes and fells and there are walks to suit all abilities. Castlehead viewpoint is a 20 minute walk with Derwentwater and Friar’s Crag about 30 minutes walk. Castlerigg Stone Circle is about 45 minutes walking and Walla Crag is a 1.5 hours walk from Carl Side Cottage. Or for something a little more relaxed why not simply take a cruise on the launch across the lake.

Derwentwater Launch Co., Keswick
No trip to Cumbria is complete without a trip on a lake – and what better way to do it than on a traditional launch. You can get off at numerous jetties, combine your trip with a walk or a picnic, and explore this very beautiful lake at your own pace. You could even visit Lingholm where children’s author Beatrix Potter got some of her inspiration and has a brilliant café where you can enjoy breakfast/lunch
Lake District Distillery, Bassenthwaite
This distillery is home to the Lake Districts first whisky, produced on the premises alongside their own gins and vodka. Take the distillery tour, with a brilliant fly-through which gives a bird’s eye view of Allerdale and the River Derwent from its source to the sea, eat lunch, snacks or dinner in the excellent bistro and make sure you treat yourself in the gift shop. The Alpaca tours at Lakes Distillery - Although this activity may seem like it is focused on the gin making and whisky tasting, there is actually another tour you can take that will make the animal lovers among you delighted.
The alpaca tour offered by the Lakes Distillery is a half hour long experience where you can pet, take photos and even feed the alpacas, young and old. This tour is great for anyone of any age, but as a teen its makes a particularly interesting story to tell friends and even post on social media.
Lake District Wildlife Park, Bassenthwaite
See more than 100 amazing animals in 24 acres of parkland in a gorgeous Allerdale location. You can get up close with the furry, scaly and feathered residents or even try a keeper experience and learn what it’s like to look after these fascinating creatures. Bring a picnic or eat in the on-side café.
Whinlatter Forest Park, between Keswick and Cockermouth, and close to Bassenthwaite Lake, is England’s only true mountain forest and, thanks to its great Cumbrian location, offers endless fun for all the family. Take a stroll or go mountain biking around the special trails, try something different on a Segway lesson or swing through the trees on a Go Ape course. There's tree top adventures, Gruffalo trails and much more for families. Bike hire is on offer and a great café for when you’ve worked up an appetite.
Honister, Keswick
There is more to this working slate quarry than meets the eye. It’s been reimagined as a high-adrenalin experience which will take those with a head for heights across the Cumbrian & Lake District landscape on an historic via ferrata. You can also explore the mines and even climb in their caverns. Don’t forget a slate souvenir

出行信息

Parking tends to be free on the West coast, some have parking disks (two will be available to you) and a few towns will have pay as you go. At Castlegate, the drive is large enough for 3 /4 cars, and parking is free outside the property in the village of Hayton
