Surrounded by the Drakensberg mountains, our Rondavel is a 2-bedroom self-catering rustic cottage. Situated in the Monks Cowl area of the central Drakensberg. This cottage is off grid, perfect for hikers, nature lovers alike and anyone looking for a tranquil getaway. We have limited solar electricity, hot water and drinking water straight from a nearby mountain stream. We live simply and respect nature. The property is one of the highest private properties in this part of the mountains. This is a true Drakensberg experience. The Rondo is a retreat for persons looking for a tranquil, cosy, peaceful home, perfect for bird watchers and nature lovers. This Drakensberg retreat is located inside Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Okhahlamba World heritage Site, with access to the high peaks in the Central Drakensberg, (be aware of gate closing times). We wish to share this wonderful place, its views and natural beauty. Experience the warm embrace of an earthen dwelling for a getaway in nature. Leaving the worries of the modern world behind, you will enjoy an off the grid experience. Relax on the veranda and watch the milky way unfold with beautiful starlit skies. Enjoy a sundowner out on the deck with an open fire to relax by. Listen to the Chorister Robin with its variety of songs from early mornings through the day. At night you often hear the Jackal calling. We encourage you to explore the beauty that surrounds us here in the beautiful central Berg. Because this is a nature experience, please bear in mind you may be exposed to the elements such as wind, rain and sunshine outdoors. The main open-plan loft bedroom has a king-sized bed. The north facing loft bedroom has two single beds. There is a bathroom with a shower, hand wash basin and toilet. The central lounge and kitchen are open plan with a cosy pot-belly stove to keep the Rondo cosy on cold winter days. There is a large veranda to enjoy the spectacular starry night skies, while braaing on the fire pit, or relaxing on the deck with a glass of wine

Absolutely wonderful place!! Clean, incredibly cosy, has everything you need for your stay. Fantastic for an ‘off-grid’ experience while still feeling actually quite luxurious! Hans and Dalene are delightful hosts with a deep knowledge of Drakensburg, so do pick their brains for the best hikes. Cross your fingers that Dalene’s ‘niece’ is around - she makes the best cupcakes 👍
Very very very amazing stay , with hikes just outside your doorstep. With the rondo well equipped with all the essentials, the hosts were extremely friendly and made sure we felt at home with their kind and generous hospitality . Thank you for making our stay special. Jan and Abby .
Lovely slightly rustic but very comfortable cottage. The weather was not kind but the woodstove did a sterling job keeping us warm.
Absolutely fantastic location for walking in the Drakensberg. You are already in the park! Dalene’s place is also spotlessly clean. They are an excellent host. Very effective communications and lots of very thoughtful touches. If you want to sit and look at the view then this is not the place necessarily for you. However, the hosts generously offered their patio with a view.
The Rondo is lovely and homely! The surroundings are just awesome! Dalene and Hans are the perfect hosts. It feels like we have known them for many years! Thank you for the hospitality. We will certainly be back.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to our double-storied Rondavel (fondly known as The Rondo). This charming abode on the Hlwazini property, is situated in the Monks Cowl area of the central Drakensberg. It is located within Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Okhahlamba World heritage Site. The Rondo is nestled within a clump of yellowwood trees and indigenous bushes. The Rondo’s location is a perfect base for hikers, nature lovers and anyone looking for a tranquil getaway.
Day hikers will be enthralled by the expansive panorama of peaks, mountains and valleys with its rich fauna and flora. Forest walks along the nearby Sterkspruit river, allow one to experience micro ecosystems and the symbiotic relationship between plants and animals. Pools in the nearby valley provide welcome relief to hot and wary bodies. The spectacular Nandi’s and Sterkspruit falls are only a few hours of hiking away. Altitude wise, Hlwazini is one of the highest situated private properties in this part of the Drakensberg mountains, making this experience unique. For birdwatchers there is a rich variety of birds such as chorister robin-chat and bush blackcap and many more.
We encourage an experience where you can immerse yourself in nature, enjoy the starry night sky & appreciate mother nature’s wonders.
Unfortunately there is no public transport, servicing the area. A shady parking spot is available however.
