Fossil Cottage sleeps up to 6 guests in 3 double bedrooms (two King doubles, and a 4ft 6 double) with a further single child’s bedroom (small but cosy with children’s books). The cottage can accommodate 7 but 6 guests are preferred, and the dining table and sofas seat 6. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need for preparing breakfast, lunch, supper or even baking cakes. There is a dining room (note the table seats 6 not 7) and separate lounge with two large sofas, TV with Netflix, DVD player and a log burner (logs supplied). The garden wraps around the house and has peaceful views across the Purbeck hills from the summer house patio, and morning sunshine is best enjoyed in the front garden. The garden is reasonably secure for a dog, but only one dog please and additional dog rules apply (neighbours have cats and have not appreciated visiting dogs in their garden!) PLEASE NOTE THE GARDENER NORMALLY VISITS LATE MORNING ON A THURSDAY FOR 3 HOURS.
We had a wonderful weekend at this beautiful cottage. Catherine was incredibly helpful and thoughtful throughout our stay. Certainly the best place we have stayed in Dorset
The cottage was lovely and just as described. Catherine was an excellent host - nothing was too much trouble. She even supplied jelly babies for our grandson! Would love to return.
Catherine's house in Church Knowle is spectacular. It's location is in the best part of the Dorset countryside, within easy drive of Corfe and the beach. The house itself is beautiful and was spotlessly clean. Catherine met us at the house and was friendly, helpful and responsive - we couldn't have asked for a better stay.... thank you!
Explore this incredible part of Dorset! My local recommendations are set out on my website, and there are walking books and maps for your use in the cottage, along with a selection of leaflets for local attractions.
Church Knowle is a picturesque Purbeck village with 'The New Inn' pub, and an animal sanctuary. Fossil Cottage is a really tranquil spot, and there are views across the valley from the summer house patio.
Corfe Castle is 1.5 miles down the lane, and has several good pubs, The Pink Goat bistro/cafe (my personal favourite place); a National Trust shop, traditional sweet shop, bakery and Post office with Village Store which has a really good food selection. An experience not to be missed is taking the steam train from Corfe to Swanage - and of course the ruins of Corfe Castle (National Trust), Enid Blyton's Kirrin Castle needs to be explored.
The seaside town of Swanage with a sandy beach is 7.5 miles away with everything from arcades and crazy golf to art galleries and coffee shops. Love Cake is my regular stop for lunch, whilst Chococo Chocolate Shop & Cafe is the place to go for coffee and sweet treats. For Sunday lunch I highly recommend The Salt Pig Too. For food shopping, Swanage has a CoOp and Budgens, and Moores the butcher is good for meat.
Durlston Country Park is just north of Swanage, with spectacular sea views and Anvil Point Lighthouse, and is one of my favourite places to walk.
Wareham is 6 miles and has a riverside market on Saturdays. I recommend Christies Beauty Salon for nails and massage, and for food or just cake, The Bear is the best place in Wareham - Sunday lunch is also excellent here. Do visit Wareham's amazing original cinema, The Rex. Wareham has Sainsbury's for food shopping.
Kimmeridge bay and the Etches Fossil museum are 4 miles from Fossil Cottage. Sunsets are spectacular here, and Clavells offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.
For the best sandy beach, visit Studland, where there are sandy dunes, views of Old Harry Rocks and safe shallow waters to swim. At Knoll Beach there is a National Trust shop and cafe, and Studland Water Sports can get you on the water (wetsuit and equipment loans) and book their Studland Sauna Hut!
Further along towards the ferry at Shell Bay, there is the Shell Bay Restaurant which is a fabulous harbour front location for a special meal.
In Studland itself there is the Bankes Arms pub and The Pig. One of the best ways to spend an afternoon is at The Pig with their outdoor bar and pizza oven - a really tranquil spot with sea views from the garden.
Studland Stables offers cliff top and beach rides for those wanting a special horse ride.
Pack your walking shoes! The South West coast path is especially wonderful here, with some incredible cliff top walks.
For round walks, go from Worth Matravers to Windspit caves, then along the coast path to St Aldhems Chapel and back in land from Chapman's Pool.
A shorter walk to Chapman's Pool can be done from Kingston, with amazing views as you walk down the valley to the sea.
Visit the extraordinary abandoned village at Tyneham and walk down to Worbarrow Bay, or if you want a challenging but spectacular all day walk, go on as far as Lulworth Cove.
And from Fossil Cottage, you can take the ridge along to Corfe Castle (a spectacular view looking down on the castle), and come back up the valley.
For activity days out with children, Dorset Adventure Park is an inflatable water assault course and great fun, in Corfe. Monkey World and The Tank Museum are also a short drive away

I manage Fossil Cottage myself to ensure it is presented to the highest standard. I believe that finishing touches make all the difference, and hope you will find it to be your #exceptionalpurbeckholidayhome. I am a photographer, so if you would like a beach or castle view photo shoot of your stay, do book this with me too, £150. I look forward to welcoming you to this incredible part of Dorset.
