This place was just what we needed for our family gathering. The grounds are peaceful, welcoming, and well-maintained. Allison is very good at staying in touch, and there wasn’t a thing we needed while there. The kitchen is well stocked, the beds comfortable, and the house is nicely decorated.

Celebrating two birthdays with adult siblings and spouse at The Southern after the solar eclipse experience in southern IL was a great gathering place. Well stocked clean kitchen including coffee and good sized mugs. Very peaceful setting. We loved the flowering trees and grounds. The nearby bike and hiking trails were easy to get to. Host responded immediately to supply a non-skid bathmat. We were glad that the other issues that would of enhanced our stay (safety and maintenance related) that we communicated after our departure were taken seriously and sincerely. Host told us about Larry's Cakes, which were amazing!

We stayed at The Southern during our sojourn to southern Illinois for the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. So the price was quite high, as were all other accommodations. We chose it because we wanted some solitude during the days we weren't at SIU for the eclipse and for its proximity to hiking, both of which we appreciated for the other 3 days of our stay. It met our needs, I particularly loved the birdsong at dawn, and we enjoyed the fire pit. Hiked at Garden of the Gods, Granite City State Park and on the Tunnel Hill bike path.

We had an unbelievable getaway to this property! Coming from Chicago with four young girls, this was the perfect place to recharge over spring break! The girls had a blast exploring the woods and land around the house. We had an excellent time hiking through various trails in Shawnee. This location could not be better for a remote getaway. The house was clean, all beds were comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked for all the meals we cooked at home. The communication from the hosts was top notch- and the website they provided with amenities and things to know was extremely helpful. Thank you so much for an excellent stay!
