At the Caminho de Sao Joao, about 600 m high above the coast of the fishing village Paul do Mar, lies our rustic country house Ovelha do Sol ("Sun Sheep"). Here you can relax as a couple, with family or friends in your own domicile with a breathtaking almost all-round sea view, fresh wideness and dreamlike sunsets. An ideal location to explore the rustic southwest of the flower island. The Levada Nova runs past only about 50 metres above and the road down the hill leads to the beach ... Our rustic country house offers a living space of approximately 90 square metres. On the ground floor you will find the entrance hall with guest toilet and the passage to the living room with dining area, fireplace and a small sitting area with bench. From here you enter the well-equipped kitchen and from there the winter garden. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one in the style of the famous "Reid's Hotel" in colonial ambience, the other called "Calhau" in fancy maritime decor with sea views through both windows. Also on the upper floor is a bathroom with washbasin, WC and rainforest shower. The entrance hall and living room as well as the winter garden have their own accesses to the sun terrace with umbrella and deck chairs. In the winter garden with barbecue, bar table, washing machine and dryer there is a set of table and chairs which can be used indoors and outdoors. The entire area is enclosed by a wall and can be closed off from the street by a wooden gate. A sitting area with bistro table and chairs invites you to rest in the upper "Owl Garden" – with a magnificent sea view.

In één woord: wauw! wat een geweldige plek was dit om te verblijven. Alles wat je maar kan bedenken dat je nodig hebt, is in het huisje aanwezig. Het huisje is sfeervol en je voelt je meteen thuis, mede ook door het warme ontvangst van vera en chris. De hosts hebben geweldige tips om de omgeving te verkennen. Als we nog eens naar madeira gaan, komen we zeker terug
Das Häuschen Ovelha de Sol hat uns super gefallen. Es ist total liebevoll und durchdacht eingerichtet und lässt keine Wünsche übrig. Besonders das tolle Kinderzimmer, das unsere Tochter geliebt hat, und die schöne Sonnenterasse haben es uns angetan. Die Küche ist bestens ausgestattet - grade mit Kind kocht man doch öfters und es war alles vor Ort. Vera und Chris haben tolle Tipps gegeben! Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt.
Wir hatten einen wundervollen Aufenthalt in Vera's wunderschönen Haus. Die Aussicht auf das Meer und die Ruhe sind traumhaft, man hört Kühe, Schafe und Vögel. Die Wanderer die die Wanderung 49 vom Rother laufen, laufen direkt am Haus vorbei. Ein Nachbar hat uns sogar Eier für unsere Tochter geschenkt. Vera war immer hilfsbereit und der persönliche Empfang war das I Tüpfelchen. Außerdem war alles, was man brauchen kann vorhanden. Ein Zuhause fern von der Heimat. Tausend Dank für die schöne Zeit.
Wir hatten eine großartige Zeit und haben das Cottage sehr genossen. Die Begrüßung war sehr herzlich und die Tipps waren hervorragend! Die Küche ist toll ausgestattet. Es hat uns wirklich an nichts gefehlt, wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen sehr gerne wieder! Vielen Dank!

The house and the property with terrace, driveway and garden are surrounded by a wall and open or closable to the road by a wooden gate. Pasture land adjoins on the other sides. The nearest neighbours live far above and starting a little way down the hill. The surroundings are rural and quiet.
The village of São João belongs to Fajã da Ovelha. Ovelha means sheep, which is also the origin of the name of our cottage. From here down the hill you come to the centre of the village and find the church, a small supermarket and one or two miradouros (sights in the sense of a great view). Continuing down the road, you reach Paul do Mar, a small fishing village with a beach and restaurants. On the way down, it's worth stopping off for a great view from the balcony of the Precipicio bar-restaurant.
From the house up the mountain, after about 50 metres, the Levada Nova crosses, leading east to Prazeres and west to Ponta do Pargo.
However, if you shy away from the walk, you can easily drive up the hill by car and turn left. On this road to the way to the western end of the island with the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse and one of our favourite restaurants (O Forno), the Panoeste bakery and pastry shop appears after just a few minutes on the right, also highly recommended.
If you turn right, after a few metres in front of the bus stop, the Ecoponto appears, where you can dispose of your waste in an environmentally friendly way. A few metres further on, on the right-hand side, there is a mini-Mercado with bar where you can get essential items for your daily needs. The next somewhat larger midi-mercado can be found at the roundabout in Prazeres.
