Sheringham boasts a Blue Flag beach supported by a multitude of amenities, making it a popular destination for visitors. Originally a small fishing village until the arrival of the railway in 1887, The Poppy Line still operates heritage diesel and steam engines running from the pretty station in Sheringham centre, along the coastline through Weybourne and Kelling, then on to the charming Georgian market town of Holt. The town hosts a traditional market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and offers plenty of family entertainment whatever the weather! The Reef leisure centre has an indoor swimming pool, and there are numerous festivals and carnivals all year round, including the famous Crab & Lobster Festival and Sheringham Carnival. The hourly Coasthopper bus service that passes through Sheringham in summer, and every two hours in winter, will take you all along the coast to the east and west. For delicious fresh local seafood, head a few miles east along the coast road towards Cromer, to Rocky Bottoms. Here they serve local shellfish from pot to plate to a backdrop of incredible coastal views.
Further along the stunning North Norfolk Coast is the seaside town of Cromer. This family-orientated traditional town features an award-winning pier, beautiful beaches with rock pools, cliffs and great sandy expanses, plus many fabulous independent places to eat out. Cromer is known locally as Norfolk's surfing hot spot. Lessons and equipment hire can be booked at Glide Surf School. Cromer Museum tells of the town's maritime history and a fun, family day out at Amazona Zoo is a must. Cromer Pier has a Pavillion Theatre, the only of its kind in the country, which stages traditional variety shows and live music events. With so many carnivals, markets and festivals, there's always something entertaining going on in and around Cromer.
Beautiful National Trust properties at Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall and Sheringham Park are only a short drive away, and well worth a visit to submerge yourself in history. And there's always cake available from the resident cafes!
