If you ever wanted to stay in a gallery, OKO is your go-to. This traditional Kominka was renovated by Akizuki based aki(architects) in August 2022, whose previously work for Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA. It has 2 bedroom ensuites, a cafe-style dining room, and a gallery space connecting to a Japanese garden. Upon arrival, you will find the private gallery hung with rotating sets of works by artists such as David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Yokoo Tadanori, Madsaki, Christo, and Richard Estes.
Had an amazing stay here. The gallery had everything we needed - as well as lots of extra nice touches - for few days in Akizuki. The town was very quiet and the area beautiful. Would love to visit again some day.
Kerry was a very welcoming host. He made time to greet us when we arrived and gave us some tips as to where we could hang out in the neighbourhood. The space was beautifully curated. We loved how it felt like a treasure hunt just locating the rooms. It’s just so seamlessly designed and if you are not in the mood for such a game, Kerry also kindly prepared a map. We had everything we needed and the beds were so comfortable. The neighbourhood is peaceful and quiet. I would love to visit again during the Sakura season next year. I can only imagine how beautiful the neighbourhood would look!
The house is at the main Akizuki street. Once here you can easily walk to everywhere in the village. Guides to Akizuki are included. The house is alongside a hotaru (firefly) viewing river - season is late May through June. From dusk until about 9pm it can be a wonderland.
Interestingly, Akizuki has no reticulated water supply (there is a black-water drainage system though) as it sits on one of Japans top mineral water aquifers. The house has its own mineral water bore. Enjoy water from the tap and have a mineral water shower.
Once in Akizuki OKO art+inn, you can easily walk to everything Akizuki has waiting for you. There are restaurants and cafes.
How to get to Akizuki: trains and buses, and a combination of, from Fukuoka take about 70-100 minutes (search how to get to Akizuki from Fukuoka for suggestions) Driving, using the expressway, is easy and the most convenient and takes less than one hour.
自我介绍
I am New Zealander who has lived in Japan for over 30 years. Japan, its cuisine, and people were so wonderful that one day, maybe after 10 years, I realized I was actually living here, and had no real wish to leave. Every morning I wake up early, exercise and then walk, with two Border Collies, up the river and into the slopes of Mt. Koshosan (where the “Hidden Fortress” at the root of the Star Wars fantasy can be found). After selling my Japan business I decided to invest in destination infrastructure in Akizuki. I hope to revive the local economy, bring new families and life back to the village where the average age of its residents is around 70 years. I also hope to be able to show to visitors, inbound and domestic, the joy of life in this very special, beautiful rural environment. A place just 45 minutes from a major international airport but a million miles away in ambiance.
