Asakura · 整套别墅 · 1室1床1.0卫 · 可住4人 · Akizuki Kayabuki Kominka
A renovated Edo period thatched roof house, formerly a “prison” for samurai-engineers who failed to build a stone bridge (the current “Meganebashi”) and were imprisoned until they completed the job. The building is protected under the historical buildings act, and the craftsment who worked on the straw-roof have worked on UNESCO registered buildings throughout the Japan. Full equipped with modern utilities. Adjacent to a river and surrounded by an abundance of nature, this relaxing setting is a perfect hub for remote working (..or just relaxing!) This traditional Kominka was renovated by Akizuki based aki(architects) in September 2023, who previously work for Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA. It has 1 double bed bedroom with a sofa and TV, a fully equipped kitchen + dining room, a washing machine and 2 futon beds. The front of the house looks to the south and at the river side, with plenty of sunlight and a gentle breeze. The back of the house, where the bedroom is, looks at a private Japanese garden through the Engawa, from where you can access the bathroom.
We were blown away by the house: both authentic and incredibly beautifully renovated, it felt like being in an episode of an interior design show. The house is spacious and well-equipped. It is located a couple meters away from a lovely little river, in a beautiful, quiet village. The hosts are very considerate (we especially appreciated the fruits and breakfast foods they left for us). Their Akizuki recommendations made the stay truly special and we felt we made the most of it. We were sad to leave and would recommend this house to anyone looking for a beautiful accommodation in a beautiful location.
Extremely unique experience living in a quiet and very local, old town. Very good way of experiencing how it is like living like locals. Very nice neighbourhood to walk around, enjoy the scenery and quiet town. For people driving - pls don’t follow Google map too closely, as they will ask you to drive over an extreme narrow bridge. Lights - it might be abit dim for some , but for us it’s ok as we are mostly resting. If you are cooking, might need a brighter light. Neighbouring shops - there are many interesting shops around the area , but most of the shops do not follow the closing hours / days indicated by the Google, so just need to be aware. Most restaurants around the area are closed at night, meaning you can’t get dinner around the town, need to go to Asakura area - about 10-15 mins drive away which is ok if you drive but inconvenient if you do not. Host - Kerry is very friendly and most welcoming . It is rather inspiring on the goal of his to help revive the town.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The place was lovely, inside and out. Much taste and care were put into designing and outfitting this elegant home. It was both very comfortable to sleep in and practical(clothes washer, parking, coffee, breakfast supplies). In addition, one feels elevated in this space. The hosts were friendly and available. It is situated beside a little creek in a small village which is very nice to experience as one approaches and departs. We would certainly stay there again, should the opportunity arise.
The house is close to the main Akizuki street. Once here you can easily walk to everywhere in the village. Guides to Akizuki are included. The house is alongside a hotaru (firefly) viewing river - season is late May through June. From dusk until about 9pm it can be a wonderland.
Interestingly, Akizuki has no reticulated water supply (there is a black-water drainage system though) as it sits on one of Japans top mineral water aquifers. The house has its own mineral water bore. Enjoy water from the tap and have a mineral water shower.
Once in Akizuki Kayabuki Kominka, you can easily walk to everything Akizuki has waiting for you. There are restaurants and cafes.
How to get to Akizuki: trains and buses, and a combination of, from Fukuoka take about 70-100 minutes (search how to get to Akizuki from Fukuoka for suggestions) Driving, using the expressway, is easy and the most convenient and takes less than one hour.
自我介绍
I am New Zealander who has lived in Japan for over 30 years. Japan, its cuisine, and people were so wonderful that one day, maybe after 10 years, I realized I was actually living here, and had no real wish to leave. Every morning I wake up early, exercise and then walk, with two Border Collies, up the river and into the slopes of Mt. Koshosan (where the “Hidden Fortress” at the root of the Star Wars fantasy can be found). After selling my Japan business I decided to invest in destination infrastructure in Akizuki. I hope to revive the local economy, bring new families and life back to the village where the average age of its residents is around 70 years. I also hope to be able to show to visitors, inbound and domestic, the joy of life in this very special, beautiful rural environment. A place just 45 minutes from a major international airport but a million miles away in ambiance.
