Set in a sleepy rural Devon village with a great community pub, our cottage provides the perfect couples retreat with sumptuous Egyptian cotton bedding and plush new carpets. The cottage offers a glorious open plan ground floor with under floor heating, a cosy lounge with smart TV, a kitchen with new appliances and plenty of bench space plus a dining table and chairs. Upstairs is a spacious bedroom with king size bed and en-suite bathroom. Egyptian cotton linen and fluffy towels await to make your stay even more luxurious. Sage cottage is furnished with exquisite soft furnishings, antique furniture and historical pieces giving it the charm you’d expect from a Devon cottage. A selection of games and jigsaws is also provided for your entertainment. The cottage is set within the grounds of our private family home and has its own patio with outdoor dining area for you to enjoy alfresco meals or a glass of wine whilst sitting and listening to the evening birdsong. With plenty to see and do you could find yourself exploring the wonders of Dartmoor and its stunning Tors (such as Haytor and Sheeps Tor) or the ancient mystical beauty of Wistman’s Wood. Alternatively, the delightful town of Chagford is only a short drive away and offers fantastic pubs, charming shops and a superb lido. What to do: You'll be spoilt for choice - with Dartmoor National Park, Exmoor National Park, the cathedral city of Exeter, the English Riviera, multiple RHS and NT sites plus Devon and Cornwall beaches all within reach - there's no shortage of activities to keep you entertained. For good food and great facilities for all the family, try the local Waie Inn which is only 10 minutes walk away. Many of the surrounding villages offer picture perfect pubs and gardens for you to discover, we can recommend several if you need. Okehampton, the gateway to Dartmoor, is just 8 miles away, the charming town of Chagford (15 miles) with it's lovely pubs and quaint shops is a must visit. Also nearby is the popular Hayne, Devon wedding venue, which can be reached within 5 minutes drive or 15 minutes walking. Being located near the edge of Dartmoor National Park means you're in prime location to explore Dartmoor's rugged and wild scenery. We'd definitely recommend stopping at Bellever Forest or Wistman's Wood. Walk up the famous tors for incredible views and see wild ponies roaming the hills! Explore the lovely Moretonhampstead, or the ancient town of Tavistock. Sample Exmoor's green and pleasant landscape (30 mins) and the lovely market town of South Molton. For something different you can try Go-Ape within the stunning Haldon Forest. There are bikes available to hire to ride either the Tarka Trail or the nearby Granite Way (a largely off road from Okehampton to Lydford Gorge through the Dartmoor National Park). National Trust offerings locally like Castle Drogo, Lundy Island, Lydford Gorge, Finch Foundry, Fingle Bridge, Knightshayes and many more are all easy day trips. Further afield is the world famous Eden Project, with huge greenhouse biomes housing artificial rainforest and Mediterranean ecosystems. You'll be spoiled for choice. In less than an hour you can reach some of England's most beautiful beaches. Head north to Bude, Woolacombe, Saunton Sands or Croyde if you want expansive beaches and great surf, and south if you prefer the famous Jurassic coast red stone and calmer waters. Both are brilliant for a summer's day out in the water. The Roman cathedral city of Exeter is only 18 miles away. A wonderful city to wander, visit the cathedral, enjoy some fantastic shopping, restaurants and explore the underground passages. While in Exeter visit the vibrant town of Topsham with wonderful places to have lunch by the water. The town is known for its eclectic antique and vintage shops, as well as local produce markets.
We stayed in Sage Cottage for 9 nights to combine a family wedding at nearby Hayne with a holiday in the Devon area. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the bed really comfortable and the Lemon Drizzle cake left by the hosts for our arrival was a really nice touch (not to mention delicious!). Zeal Monachorum is very quiet and peaceful but is also a great base for exploring all that Devon has to offer. We would highly recommend Bec and Ian to anyone looking for accommodation in the mid Devon area.
A Beautiful, well equipped cottage in a very peaceful location. What an absolute find! We had a lovely 3 night stay. My Wife & I had travelled down early, from Yorkshire to meet our first Grandchild 🍾. Bec very kindly made ‘Sage Cottage’ available early for us. It is fabulous, spotlessly clean and well laid out. We would love to stay again and would highly recommend staying here.
Bec responding quickly and clearly to our advance questions. Sage Cottage is a very cosy retreat that ticks all the boxes and we were made to feel really welcomed with a personal note and a tasty cake!
Thank you for a pleasant and peaceful stay, a bit remote for our house hunting in Exeter and Torbay but not a problem. Expected to find washing up liquid and J cloths as well as shower gel but easily remedied. Very good hot water !!!
The cottage is located in the village of Zeal Monachorum (Postcode EX17) which is featured in the Domesday book of 1086. The ancient rural village sits on a hill and has some fantastic views of the surrounding countryside to Dartmoor and beyond. It boasts a lovely church (with an ancient Yew tree reported to be over 1000 years old), multiple glorious walks along public footpaths & bridleways and a pub with a swimming pool, sports centre and both indoor & outdoor kids play areas.
