Learning more about the history and geology is all part of the experience too, which makes you appreciate how wonderful the location of the villa is. The Cávado River is a great place to go canoeing, with other water sports such as rafting and canyoning also being available to try. Approximately 20 km away from the villa is the town of Póvoa de Lanhoso, famous for the medieval Castelo de Lanhoso. The castle has more recently been turned into a local history museum and is a great place to get panoramic views across the town below and areas further afield. Heading into the centre of town, Pontido Park is a lovely green space in which to go for a cycle ride and for younger children to enjoy the playground and skate area. A short drive from the centre of Póvoa de Lanhoso is the quirky must-see site of the Calvos Oak. The tree is estimated to be around 500 years old and has become an unlikely tourist attraction within an attractive park that's ideal for picnics and walks.
