I stayed with Shirley and Madrika for 2 months while I was rotating at Karapitiya Hospital, and I cannot speak highly enough about their kind hospitality. The location is excellent for those working at the hospital, a mere 10-15 minute walk (very safe road; also lovely, kind neighbors). The room was clean, shower with hot water, reliable wifi, AC available (similar price to others in the area), beautiful garden/porch, and bonus that they will cook amazing Sri Lankan food for a fair price (and excellent variety!). They also made life so much easier by helping me plan trips (provided guides, maps), providing local recommendations (e.g., the beach I surfed at throughout my stay), dropping me off around town on several occasions, cleaning the room, doing laundry, providing tea in the afternoon, and always having water available for my to buy (same price as the store). On top of this, they went above and beyond whenever issues came up (e.g., needing to mend clothing, track down luggage, completely change my travel plans). Overall, as a lone female in the area, I felt that I had the perfect balance of a having a local family and privacy. I highly, highly recommend Shirley and Madrika's place for anyone who will be rotating at the hospital and would like to better know Sri Lankan culture, food, and true kindness and hospitality.

Shirley and Madrika are so lovely hosts! They both are very helpful and we felt very welcome. The day we arrived late, Shirley orgsnized a transport from Colombo airport to his homestay. Karapitiya Teaching Hospital is within walking distance, so it was perfect for us. Shirley showed us the way to the hospital the day before we started our elective so we didn't have to cope alone. They even cooked sri lankan breakfast for us and we learned about Sri lankan culture. Very recommendable especially for students :-)

Shirley and Madrika made me having an easy start in Sri Lanka. From the first moment I felt very welcome and enjoyed the familiar setting during my whole stay. It is perfect stay for students or doctors of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and for long term stays. For vacation at the beach maybe not the best choice. So, when you during your elective really want to go to hospital I can only recommend Shirleys Homestay to you! It was a great experience to stay with Shirley and his wife.

I stayed at Shirley's homestay for 8 weeks, and my time there couldn't possibly have been better. I was in Galle working at Karapitiya Hospital, which is an easy 10 to 15 minute walk away, so the homestay's location was perfect for this and was perfect for a long stay like mine. It was also very easy to get a tuk tuk from around the hospital, which could then get you to the Fort area in about 15 minutes. My host, Aluthgama, was extremely kind and helpful. He picked me up from the airport, gave me rides around town, and even drove me on a trip about 5 or 6 hours away from Galle for a much cheaper rate than local private driving companies. He also provided anything I needed (e.g., bottled water) and helped me with anything I needed while I was there (e.g., helping me buy a local phone and data plan). He was always available for questions or assistance and spoke great English, so communication was easy. He even gave me some parting gifts before I left. Laundry, ironing, and afternoon tea were free. In addition to the option of buying air conditioning (which was modern and worked well), he offered an option to buy three meals a day for a very reasonable price. These meals were all great, had great variety, and were a really good opportunity to try out as many different Sri Lanka dishes as possible. He also had banana and mango trees on the property so those were available fresh. I think having the option of having meals provided is a very useful amenity to have in Galle, especially if you are staying for a long period of time. There are two rooms at Aluthgama's residence, one of which was newly completed during my stay. Both of them are clean and have everything you need, including hot water for showers. Each room also has a peaceful veranda with a fan that looks out on Aluthgama's well-kept yard and garden. Overall, I really cannot stress enough how great this place was. I think it is often hard to tell on Airbnb which places are better than others, but I can assure you that this is probably one of the very best places to stay in Galle. I had several friends who were staying in other Airbnbs in Galle, and we all agree that the place I stayed was the best.

Simply amazing. Shirley sir is a amazing host and very helpful. Had a wonderful stay at his place. Loved the food i had at his place. I can proudly stay after staying with him for three days i have a family back in Srilanka. Will never forget the hospitality. Highly Highly recommend.
