The beautiful sandy beach, with its pine trees, sand dunes and colourful beach huts, is Wells' most famous feature. Walk for 1.5 miles or so along the golden sands and you'll end up in Holkham. Gwyneth Paltrow walked across this very beach during the closing scenes of Shakespeare in Love. Whether you decide to collect shells, fly a kite or build a sand castle, this is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and deservedly so! For nature lovers, you can spot oyster catchers and ringed plovers, who nest on the beach, along with some common and little terns.
The Quay and The Granary
The busy fishing Quay is an ever popular attraction. Children fish for crabs from the edge of the quay, and frequent the amusement arcade, the ice cream stall and the sweet shop. You can buy cockles and crab sticks from the fish stall and watch the fishing boats come and go. The freshly caught seafood is a speciality in many of the local restaurants, and eating fish 'n chips on the quay is a popular pastime. One of the main industries of the town in the 19th century was malting. Some of the granaries and maltings still exist, and an impressive feature of the harbour is the large granary building with its distinctive overhanging gantry. Built in 1903, the granary has been turned into luxury flats with magnificent views of the harbour.

The local coast hopper bus is an excellent way of travelling along the North Norfolk Coast.
Visit Holkham Hall
Holkham Hall is one of Britain's most majestic stately homes. The Hall is part of the Holkham Estate which also includes a Deer Park, Holkham Beach and an acclaimed hotel and a pub. The park has hosted several open-air concerts - past performers include Jose Carreras, Jools Holland, Girls Aloud and Elton John. No trip to Holkham is complete without a visit to the Victoria Hotel, located on the coast road, near the north gate entrance to Holkham Hall. The food includes wild game and beef from the Estate, seafood caught on the coast, and local real ales.
Seal Trips at Blakeney Point
Take a boat trip and observe both common and grey seals in their natural environment at Blakeney Point. The trips depart from the picturesque Blakeney harbour or Morston quay. Not only do you experience the seals up close and personal, there are plenty of birds to be seen too you, so don't forget your camera or binoculars! Some trips enable you to step ashore, combining seal-watching with a visit to Blakeney Point Nature Reserve, owned by the National Trust. The seal trips are suitable for all ages, and are a very popular and safe way to enjoy wildlife up close without disturbing it.
And best of all....walk in either direction along the coastal paths to see the wonderful North Norfolk wilderness, and take the Coast Hopper bus back to Wells. Our particular favourite is the walk from Holkham woods to Overy Staithe.
