Just seven miles long, Bishopdale forms part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The dale stretches from Aysgarth - home to Aysgarth falls, the three stepped waterfall where you can take in what really is a fantastic setting, free to walk around followed with a bite to eat at Aysgarth Falls restaurant or a proper Yorkshire brew at Mill Race Teashop - to Kidstones pass leading to Cray and Buckden in Upper Wharfdale.
There are three picturesque villages in the dale, Thoralby, Newbiggin-in-Bishopdale and West Burton. The famous Cauldron Waterfall in West Burton was painted by Turner who spent much of his time painting throughout the area. Don't forget to stop off for lunch around the open fire at The Street Head Inn serving fresh homemade food.
Following the road down to Upper Wharfdale will take you to the market town of Grassington 18 miles away, with cobbled streets offering local food, gifts, cosy cafes and more. This village was recently transformed into Darrowby for the filming of 'All Creatures Great and Small' on Channel 5.
Heading 'up dale' will bring you out into Wensleydale where you will find the imposing privately owned 14th Century Bolton Castle. Wensleydale is a year round destination for many activities such as cycling, walking, nature watching, visiting historic castles, abbeys and bustling market towns such as Leyburn and pretty villages. Stroll along the Leyburn Shawl where it is said Mary Queen of Scots dropped her shawl whilst escaping from nearby Castle Bolton.
For steam train enthusiasts, ride the Heritage Wensleydale Railway stretching from Northallerton to Redmire, a day out full of nostalgia. There are galleries aplenty and Lucy Pittaway has a gallery in Richmond, Lucy is an acclaimed local artist. Enjoy beautiful food at the many restaurants and cafes serving local Yorkshire produce. Whatever you choose to do you will be spoilt for choice in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
