Did you know Baldwin Lake is the original “Big Bear Lake”? Modern Big Bear history begins roughly around 1845 when Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into the Yuhaviat Valley with a posse of 20 men. They were searching for outlaws who had been raiding their ranches in Riverside. As they entered the valley, they found it crawling with grizzly bears. Nope, not a misprint, they were indeed grizzly bears! It was with this discovery that Big Bear Lake got its' modern name! However, this name originally referred to what is now Baldwin Lake, as today's Big Bear Lake did not exist until the early 1900s! Baldwin Lake is a natural, intermittent, alkali lake in the Big Bear Valley of the San Bernardino Mountains, in San Bernardino County, California. It is located east of Big Bear Lake Reservoir and Big Bear City. Baldwin Lake typically has water from November through September and typically begins to dry out toward the end of September. Baldwin Lake typically remains dry through mid October-November. However, recent heavy rain and snowfall have allowed for Baldwin Lake to remain full throughout much of the year! The 156-acre Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve includes a unique pebble plain plant community as well as vernal wet meadow habitat. Baldwin Lake is also known for its wintering population of American Bald Eagles! Just go to YouTube and search “Big Bear Bald Eagle Cam” and you’ll be able to see our local family of Bald Eagles and their day to day activities:) The California Department of Fish and Wildlife purchased the property from The Nature Conservancy in 1989. It was acquired to protect existing populations of rare and endangered plants. The property was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1991. Enjoy the views of this unique area from your patio, go explore the basin on foot, or paddle board and kayak in the lake. It’s just a couple minutes walk from your patio!
Ismara, and Vince were the best hosts to date. They were super responsive and communicated very well with my inquiries and friendly reminders. The view was breathtaking, and the house decor seemed well thought out. My only issue was the discomfort of the primary bed, but that could have been a personal issue since we tend to like firmer beds, and the bed was a little too soft for us. Overall great stay and highly recommended.
One of my favorite places ive stayed. Such a happy warm experience. I’m excited to 100% come back one day.
Ismara's and Vince's place was amazing! Would love to stay again if I go back to Big Bear. I definitely recommend this place. Ismara and Vince are great hosts they are very responsive and helpful. The house is clean and very spacious. We had a very easy check-in and check-out. Thanks for having us again!
