The moment we arrived we were hoping to move out and cancel our booking. The air conditioning didn’t work and it was boiling inside. There is also an extreme lack of storage in the apartment. There is only one shelf in the bedroom with no space. The small space inside was filled with the iron board and towels. The other shelf is locked with items from the home owners. Coming for 2 weeks we couldn’t really unpack properly and had to live out of the suitcase. We tried to speak to Sophie about cancelling our booking as it’s hard to stay in the Carribean without the air con (which was advertised with the apartment). Sophie was speaking to us on the phone number that she provided and tried to convince us to cancel our Airbnb booking without guarantees so she can find someone else to stay. She said she will pay us the difference if someone else books the bungalow which seemed very unconvincing. When we didn’t agree she offered us a 50% refund which is not something that we could afford to agree to so we had to stay. After a couple of days the aircon was finally fixed so it became bearable to stay in the apartment. After staying there for a few days we wanted to arrange for the cleaner to come in so we tried calling Sophie and her aunt Laura who showed us the apartment as Sophie lives in France. Sophie completely ignored all our calls and messages and Laura said that it’s not her business to help us. We waited a couple of days and there was still no response. We cleaned the apartment ourselves and we found numerous insects, including huge bugs and a couple of cockroaches. Definitely not something you would want to deal with on vacation. So we put the request on Airbnb to recommend a cleaner which was denied by Patrick and Sophie who recommended us to contract the Airbnb concierge. So much of support from the home owners. We tried to find an external cleaner which proved to be impossible considering how busy the island gets over Christmas. We asked Patrick and Sophie again but they didn’t even try to help, so we had to stay like this for 2 weeks. If you really want to visit St Barths and limited on places to stay because of the cost perhaps this could be an option. But be prepared for zero help with any issues from the home owner, no storage space, insects and lack of any welcoming feel from the neighbours. Also if you were hoping to benefit from the proximity of the beach be prepared that it’s impossible to swim in Marigot and it’s not the nicest beach overalls. There is a layer of seaweed everywhere and the locals told us to be very careful swimming at Marigot beach as this is where the sharks have been seen. The area is quite far from town (the island is small so nothing is too far) but there are some nice places around such as Le Toiny and the natural piscine.
