The garden is nicely laid out with lovely flower beds and lawns and we keep it well maintained. The garden is very large, safe and enclosed. We have picnic tables and a barbecue available for guests use. Tornashean is very private and has no immediate neighbours (Seely Hillock, the cottage next door and Brughs, the cottage across the river belong to us also, with local tenants).
A lovely environment, so great for a large family gathering like ours. Bob (property manager) met us as we arrived, and got us well started, the owner Matthew was in touch a number of times - great communications! He left us a fine list of recommendations for things to see, restaurants, etc. Can't think of any deficiencies...
Tornashean is perfectly located a few miles within the Cairngorms National Park in Strathdon, approximately 45 miles west of Aberdeen.Tornashean is a great base for hill walking, cycling and fishing on the rivers Don, Dee and Spey or simply relaxing amongst the beautiful landscapes of the Eastern Highlands. Free fishing is available on the Tornashean beat (please bring your own tackle) we are also able to organise fishing tuition on the River Don and fishing on the River Dee at Invercauld , near Ballater.
We have a well stocked Spar shop about half a mile down the road at Bellabeg and the lovely small town of Ballater is about half an hour away. Here there is a very good Co op, a great delicatessan, lovely galleries, gift shops, cafes, restaurants and a wonderful book shop and a lovely Highgrove shop in the newly rebuilt station.
Balmoral castle is very near by and is open to the public from April through to August.
Restaurants and bars : The Steading bar, two miles down the road, is a lovely cozy place to go for drinks and nibbles. Kildrummy Inn, eleven miles down the road towards Aberdeen has a wonderful menu and really nice atmosphere. In the other direction, the Clockhouse at Tomintoul (seventeen miles) specializes in a menu with local food.
Galleries : The Lost Gallery is very close by, accessed along a forestry road in Glen Nochty. Here is a very good collection of Scottish contemporary art. We also have a summer photography exhibition at Corgarff, with local photography by Gerard Murphy. Other galleries include the Knock Gallery near Crathie and the McEwan Gallery near Ballater.
Castles and Gardens : We are surrounded by probably the biggest concentration of castles in Britain. Balmoral, Crathie, Craigievar, Corgarff, Castle Fraser, Ballindalloch being but a few of them. There is a castle trail that one can explore. The gardens at Crathie, near Banchory and Ballindalloch on Speyside are both very spectacular and have restaurants also. Further afield, Gordon Castle at Fochabers near Elgin has a beautifully restored large walled garden.
Activities for children. Mountain biking, either on the surrounding forest tracks and quiet roads or on the course up at the Lecht ski Centre, where there are excellent children’s skiing lessons during the winter and early spring months. There is a new tennis court in Bellabeg (booking through the Spar shop) fishing on our river.
The two best activity places for children are the ‘Go Ape’ aerial experience at Crathie Castle (about forty five minutes) and the Landmark Centre at Carrbridge (about one hour) which are both excellent fun for all the family for a day out. The Reindeer Centre at Nethy Bridge is also really good.
Whisky Distilleries. Tornashean is very close to all the Speyside Malt whisky distilleries. We are situated in a whisky lovers heaven and many well known distilleries ; Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Glenlivet, Macallan, Tomintoul, Glenfarclas and many many more of the Speyside distilleries are situated within three quarters of an hour to over an hour away. Two of the best to visit, which both have restaurants and excellent guided tours are The Glenlivet and Glenfarclas distilleries. Dufftown, the World whisky capital, is less than an hour away, and here you will find the Glenfiiddich , Balvennie, Mortlach and Dufftown distilleries and the Dufftown Whisky shop which stocks over six hundred different malts.
Out of interest, very recently, in October 2017, Tornashean's grounds and river featured in the 2019 Working Title film 'Mary Queen of Scots' and was the setting for the major battle scene in the film.
The house is located on the Highland tourist route which runs between Aberdeen and Inverness. The roads are good but distances are big compared to most parts of Britain. We are approximately fifty minutes from Aberdeen airport, an hour and a half from Inverness airport.
From the south it takes an hour and a half to reach us from Perth, via Glenshee and Braemar.
